hello my name is Thomas i am 20 years old and recently bought a 1979 f250 and im having a little trouble with it staying running, when i start it, fires right up and dies, put a new fuel pump and still the same thing, it has gas going into the carb, but i can only start it fully choked, i have moved the fuel air mix screws but when they are moved nothing changes. Also if i cover the top of the carb with my hands it will run for a short minute. i am thinking it is out of timing.
please help im trying to have fun with a older vehicle and rebuild it. please give me any advise
thank you
Not the timing. It would backfire through the carb or not fire at all if it were.
I hope you have a vacuum gauge, a timing light and a DVOM. First, it sounds like the stator - the pickup coil. Test the resistance on it - separate the three prong connector from the distributor and put your meter leads on the orange and purple wire connections. If the stator is good, you'll read anywhere from 400 - 700 ohms. Anything above or below that, replace it.
Other tests will be forthcoming if that ain't it....be sure the green wire on the TACH TEST horseshoe connector has a good connection...as well as the three pronger having good, clean connections.
One troubleshooting step at a time - if you don't know what's wrong, you can't fix it......unless you're one of those boneheads that just throw parts at her hoping something will fix it....
There's another thread here - "1978 F150 Only sparks when you let off key." Read up on it.
Sounds to me like the carb is almost completely clogged up. Time to take it off and rebuild it. What engine and carb do you have? You said it will run if you choke it with your hand. That would rule out the ignition system in my opinion, at least for the moment.
The mixture screws on the outside of the carb only adjust the idle mixture, nothing else.
