I have a 67 F250 with a 300 six and it will idle (sometimes) but when I gas it it makes a loud sucking noise and dies. I've changed carb, fuel pump, fuel lines, vaccum advance, coil, plugs, fuel filters, and I keep getting same result. BUT...on occasion it will idle perfect and will rev up normally three or four times in a row then act crazy again....Has this happened to anyone out there?? Is there something I'm overlooking??? Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. This is my first Ford project and it's driving me nuts...Also would like to know where timing should be set ... Thanks, J.Hays
When I'm pushing down the gas the sucking turns into like a bog down. Hard to explain it, At first big suck sound then like a sound of starving for gas...then again once every 10 or 12 times it will rev up correctly then the sucking sound again.. also it will sometimes idle smoothly then sputter out of nowhere...but I cant give it any gas or I'm back to square one...
It sure sounds like a "fuel can't keep up" problem.Have you checked all of your rubber fuel lines, especially the ones between the tank and frame? They have a tendancy to get soft and collapse.
I've replaced all rubber fuel lines from tank forward. When I took off line between tank and frame I caught the gas and suprisingly there wasn't even a hint of garbage in it... I put a clear inline filter on it to kinda guage the fuel flow but I don't know how it should look(full, 1/2 full or what) doesnt seem to ever get more than 1/2 full and no sense of urgency in pulling up fuel....I'll go look at frame again to make sure I didn't miss any bad hose....Thanks Again. I would check fuel pressure and fuel volume. That way you can easily determine if the problem is before or after the carb. A fuel pressure/volume gauge is quite cheap and easy to use(maybe you can rent one?). Any chilton or haynes manual will walk you through the easy procedure. Your fuel pressure should be 5 psi. Fuel volume should be 1 pint pumped in 30 seconds. Timing specs are: Point dwell= 37-42*, point gap=.025, ign timing= manual 6*, auto 10*, idle speed= 600 rpms. My filter runs about 1/2 full.
What side of the fuel pump is your filter on? It should be on the carb side of the pump. If it is before the pump, it can cause the fuel to perculate and bubble. Sounds like your carb has a bad accelerator pump.
My NAPA guy called around and found the original type carb. The numbers on the one that was on it never made any sense when using them to try to find a new one. It was determined by him and phone calls to several of their suppliers that we had a non original carb...So as far as I know the 1-Barrel carb is an orig. When I attempted to rebuild the old carb I reset the float three times using manufacturers instructions (ones in the kit) and every time got the same result....
Had same problem on a 4 barrel carb and the needle and seat for the secondaries were plugged. That was hard to track down cause it only happened under hard throttle.
An inline filter will always only look half full for some reason.
One other thing you might check is the distributor. Un hook the vacuum line and see what happens. I have seen them with a bad wire that would loose contact or ground out when the vacuum pulled the advance in. The advance comes in when you open the throttle plates.
