I'm looking for a 3-speed Fordomatic transmission that fits my rebuilt 272 y-block engine. I already searched the www, but only found rebuild kits or spare parts, but no complete (and maybe even rebuilt) transmission. I also asked around a bit, but so far, I didn't find one who sales such a trannie. Do one of You know, where to find one who rebuilts and sale them or who sales one as a good base for a rebuild by my own? Maybe someone has an idea...
Well, before you start to recommend a manual shift transmission or a C4 or
C6: I'd like to keep the truck stock, so I'd like to stick with the Fordomatic
And these guys seem to specialize in Ford-o-matics. They have lots of parts but I didn't see any complete transmissions. But I would think if you called them they might be able to help. They are here in Belleville, MI http://www.charlietranny.com/Fordoma...ild%20Kits.htm
I spent a lot of hours on the road through the last days, so it took some time to reply. Thanks for the input!
@Pete: I already found that engine in ebay but dismissed it, because it's a 2-speed trannie of a younger build (as NumberDummy already figured out).
I even found the website of Charlie Transmission, but I guess, they only sell
parts and kits, but I'll give it a try and contact them
@Kultulz: no chance to find one of that FOM here in Europe, so I'll have to
try on the other side of the big pond . I did a rebuild on C4 several times by my own, so I think I could handle the FOM as well. Rebuild kits are avialable in the www, so I guess, I could do the rebuild of my own. But so far, I didn't even find a FOM worth for a rebuild
I'll keep looking . Maybe someone knows a shop or dealer or has on laying in a corner of the garage...
There was a builder/parts source near Boston years ago that specialized in all the differing models FOM-MOM-2/S-FX-MX-LX-FMX but he got away from it and went to later trans models.
I did a study on these some years ago. If I can dig the info out, I will forward it to you.
Yep, I already know what ID's fit the truck. Chuck (Charlies Transmission) wrote, that he don't has any complete trannies nor does he know someone who sells them. He gave me the advice to contact local auto clubs. I found a dealer in the Craigslist who sells a lot of stuff for the old Ford trucks and I sent him an EMail. Let's see, what he says...
The guy from the craigslist told me he doesn't have one in stock but he'll keep looking for one and tell me when he get one. So I'll keep looking as well.
Yes, obviously wasn't sure when I posted this but figured someone would know. Thanks Bill.
Any ideas on where Rico can find a Fordomatic for his truck?
Rico lives in Germany, Ford trucks were not sold new there. Finding a Ford truck in Europe w/a 3 speed Ford-O-Matic will be very difficult.
1954/57 F100/350 came with 3 speed Ford-O-Matic; 1957/59 F100/350 came with 3 speed Ford-O-Matic or FX Cruise-O-Matic.
1960 F100 with 223 I-6 came with 3 speed Ford-O-Matic, all other 1960/64 F100/350's came with FX Cruise-O-Matic.
Rico cannot use a car transmission because it mounts differently.
The extension housing used on cars is different than on trucks. The car extension housing has a flange on it for the rubber insulator to bolt to, then the insulator bolts to the crossmember.
Trucks mounted differently as the converter housing has ears. There are two rubber insulators below the ears, two rubber insulators above the ears.
the transmission which is installed on my truck right now is a tranny out of a '55 car but also for a 272 (code PAK-C). The right one for the truck and the 272 engine would be the code PAT-B. The one installed has the mounting flange at the extension which is of course unused since there's no crossmember at this point on the truck. I'll check what converter housing is mounted and if there are those ears. Are the converter housing and extension interchangeable on the FOM between cars and trucks?
The identification of the Fordomatic transmission can be rather confusing. There are fifty eight configurations of the Fordomatic transmission built between 1951 and 1959...
