Guys I have experienced an issue now for the second time. My starter makes a terrible slipping/grinding noise and then restarts no issue. The last time i had a problem like this was back in 2001 with my 2000 f150 with a remote activated auto start.
This time engine was warmed up we were returning from some errands and I pulled up in front of my house and realized I need to move up a little more, got back in the truck and it happened.
In the first few months I had the truck, the starter would "miss" and just spin. When I pressed the button again it worked fine. Only once I had to push start twice and it seems ever since then the starter works as expected. I think it's a new truck thing and goes away after a few thousand miles.

Had this happen once in 16k miles, turn the key and the starter spun but never engaged. After that one time it never happened again so far but it did have the service writer document it at the next oil change.
I've had problems with starters (not on this truck, but other vehicles) that don't always shoot the pinion gear out to engage the flex plate or flywheel. When this happens, you just hear the starter motor spin freely. That problem is a bad starter. If it grinds, then the pinion is making contact with the ring gear on the flex plate or flywheel. That's potentially a more serious problem because either the ring gear is damaged or it will eventually become damaged. I'd get it to the dealer to check it out.
You never know about some of these types of anomalies. In this particular case I would have the batteries load tested to make sure the starter is getting all of the amperage need to start the engine.
I drive a loaner lariat for a week first couple days if I used the remote start it would miss the flywheel and just make god awful noise. But if I used key worked fine. After about 4 days never did it again. I kept trying to use remote start since it was a loaner figured I'd get it fixed before it was bought lol
When I test drove a 17 it at the dealer it did that. I thought thats strange and went for a test drive. I ordered my 17 and I have around 12k miles on it now and it has only done that 1 time. So I have driven 2 2017 diesel super dutys and they have both done it... makes ya think? ?
Thats funny that this happened to mine last night with 2200 miles on it . They must be having a starter problem. Can't buy anything any more without something going wrong right away .
