shaky ride..

Question shaky ride..

my '91 Explorer Sport/Navajo is a pretty shaky ride whenever i'm laying power down. it doesn't feel like an unbalanced wheel.. i really don't know enough about troubleshooting to pinpoint the location of the fault. it's no more pronounced when turning than it is when i'm going straight. when i let off the gas it seems to die down though.. i might be wrong, but does this sound like something connected to the main driveshaft? some kind of universal or CV joint?

I'd suspect a u-joint or bad (misfiring) spark plug. I had to do both on mine. I had autolite's in mine, and they always made it miss. I replaced them with bosch platinum plugs and it took the miss away. Does it seem to do it only with the torque converter locked up, or all the time? This will tell if it's a u-joint or in the engine.

shaky ride..

that's a good question. i haven't driven this particular vehicle long enough to become familiar with the torque converter's lockup patterns. however i think that there ARE times when i can get on the gas and it DOESN'T seem like it's doing the shaking thing.. i could assume that at those points the TC is not locked up, but that's a hell of an assumption to make right now.. i'll be a little more aware of the problem when i drive home tonight and post a reply. thanks for the guidance

Usually the torque convertor doesnt lockup until at least 45mph, and thats when you're cruising at a relatively even speed.

Have your wheels checked for true roundness!
sound strange, but this can cause this effect and is the first and cheapest thing to do.
