Auto fill at gas pump

I've noticed in all but one time that I've filled the tank on my 6.2 that the auto fill (the little latch on the gas pump) doesn't stay engaged so I have to stand there and hold the gas pump while it's filling. Sometimes I'm able to keep the auto fill on if I hold the hose so that it isn't putting weight on the handle. Other times, I have to hold the handle. This gets a little tedious when filling 25+ gallons. Has anyone else noticed this? Could there be something I'm missing after 28 years of driving and filling gas tanks?

I have experienced this as well. I have found that if I pull the handle out of the filler neck about 1/4 inch, it is still secure and this does not happen. I am guessing it has to do with flowrate and a bend in the filler neck causing backup until it shuts off. By backing it off slightly, some of the turbulence is out by the time it reaches the restriction and it is not an issue. You do not have to pull it out far.

Gas pumping shut-off

Ya it's funny , I just logged on here to search to see if anybody else was having that problem. Mine seems to be finicky about which pump i use and the angle of the truck. I use the same station all the time but different pumps and sometimes it runs wide open for about 4-5 seconds and then cuts off like its full so I have to hold it at 3/4 flow the whole time. But other times it flows wide open the entire time. I'm hoping its just a rare occasion because it's annoying , but not worth hauling it all the way to the dealer to inspect and probably not be able to duplicate. Time will tell, and mine is a '17 F250 6.2 gas Crew cab

Never yet with my super duty, my wife's old Monte Carlo did this every time. I finally figured out if I put the pump handle in upside down it would fill without cutting off several times.

Try a different pump or set it to half volume not full. Some nozzles are more sensitive than others to when it gets splash back at the tip. Be glad that it's kicking off and not continuing to pump when your back is turned.

I stick my wallet in there and it holds it open just fine. I have a 32 gallon tank on my 93 Silverado and after 25 years of driving it I've learned that trick.

I don't know why but any time I fill gas or diesel I always run the pump on the first click, the slow one. In my mind I think I'm getting a full tank with no need to top off since the fast fill wants to click off so quickly. Maybe the pumps around me are just too sensitive.

I also need to pull the nozzle out just a hair so it's not all the way in the neck, doesn't matter which vehicle it is, gas or diesel.

When pumping diesel you probably are putting more fuel in by pumping slower.
When you pump diesel fast it foams up and the foam will come up the neck and click off the nozzle. Then you have to wait for the foam to go down to continue. If you use the trucker pumps it's even worst.

I was as a gas station in NJ - where they still pump your gas. The handle clicked off a few times, and said "huh, that only happens to Chevys". I've had it happen and yes, you just pull it back a bit and no issues
