The pulley bolts to the water pump. If you have v belts then your engine is a 91 last year of vbelts.

I dont know what you have worked on before. The waterpump has a puley for the belt that is bolted to the shaft of the waterpump

As has been mentioned, belt configuration shouldn't matter since the pulley bolts to the pump. The only thing i can think of is that they're handing you a Powerstroke pump, but if your truck is old enough to run v belts, that seems like a stretch. The only year both were offered is 94, and it was definitely serpentine by then (which, again, shouldn't matter).

*edit* Just looked up water pump PNs for various years of IDI. I looked up '83 6.9 (1st year of IDI), '91 (my year), and '94 non-turbo (last year of IDI). PNs for the pump are all the same, which means the pump never changed. These were all for F250s. Maybe light duty IDIs (busses, marine, etc) had a different pump?

Bear with me if you look at a diagram of a belt with v setup .and look at the belt diagram of a serpentine belt you'll see that vbelt turns clockwise with the motorlooking at the motor from. The front bumper.now look at The serpentine setup and follow rotation of belt in same directionyoull see that the belt rides on the Water pump pulley on the back side of the belt I'm pretty sure that changes the direction of rotation look at which way the blades face on the pump itself "impeller blades".now do you see what I mean"or am I wrong.thanx for your time hope I'm not wasting it.

Just did a quick search on belt diagrams for IDI. They don't indicate which way the belt spins, but assuming that the serpentine runs clockwise (looking at it from the front) just like the WP belt does on my 91, they're the same. Now, a PS pump looks like it could very well go backwards looking at its diagram (and i seem to recall this from threads talking about the possibility of using a PS fan and clutch on an IDI). Regardless, like I said, the part numbers are all the same.

Um, it only matters which way the water pump spins RELATIVE to the crank. The WP pulley is RIBBED, and rides on the RIBBED side of the belt, which means it runs the same direction as the crank, just like the V-belt:

it has to do with the way it pushes the coolant in the pump housing
