I need to replace a torque converter in a C6, attached to a 390 FE. What is the best way to do this? Should I pull the motor forward from the motor mounts or will the transmission slide back far enough for the converter to come out and back in?
If anyone has done this before I would appreciate any feedback. The truck is a 65 shortbed, with p/s, p/b. Appreciate the help.
When you pull a trans you remove it from the motor using a trans jack and drop the trans cross member. Remove the torque converter, make sure to put the right type(TypeF) fluid in the new one. I can't remember the correct amount, flush the oil from the lines and cooler, new oil and filter. And place the converter back on. You have to make sure to 'seat' the converter properly which usually means rotate and wiggle it till you feel it seat all the way. I have felt a sort of a clunk as it seated. If it dosen't seat all the way, when you slide the trans to the motor, the bell housing will not seat, there will be a gap that some have tried to use bolts to pull it together. Typically bad for the converter. I did one once with out a decent jack, but I was young and recovered quickly from the dings and dents. Would not think of doing it with out a good floor jack and trans saddle now.
Will it clear the crossbrace if I remove the tranny brace? I am in definite agreement on the transmission saddle. I have 3 ton jack that I want to get a tranny saddle to fit. Bet I can get one from Harbor Frieght pretty cheap.
