We are fairly new to 5th wheel towing and I don't even know if this is possible. Never had this problem towing our bumper pull but after the first trip with our 5er I noticed the tailgate (08 F250)on our truck had quite a few stone chips in it. Now after each trip with the 5er there are more stone chips in the tailgate. Is it possible air rushing under the truck is swooping up between the truck and 5er and blasting the tailgate with whatever debris (sand, fine stone, etc.) is on the road? There is no similar damage to 5er, just the truck tailgate.
No mud flaps and my tires are a fairly aggressive tread design. Have to ask, what are rock tamers? Never heard of them.
Was looking at one of those whisker thingys (don't know what they are called) that fit on the trailer hitch and spread across under the rear bumper. Thinking this will help eliminate the problem.
Another option is to replace the tailgate with a 5th wheel style tailgate. I have one of the poly 5th wheel tailgates that I purchased from another member. I then added a cheap camera ordered off of Amazon for maybe $10. Picked up a Ford wire harness at the dealer for maybe another $20. Wired everything together and plugged it into the factory run harness connector and it works perfect. Matter of fact this cheap camera give a better picture than the Ford OEM tailgate camera.
Somewhere in the 6.7 diesel forum I have a write up and photos of the install.
