Keep in mind my uncle has been the fleet manager at a large ford dealership for 30 years and my wife was a ford service manager for 10..... your dealer is rapping you.
While you may actually need a damper and or some brake work done they are putting the screws to you, hard and deep.
Time to find a independent shop/mechanic and develop a long term relationship.
Example... a motorcraft steering damper cost $50 and takes maybe 15 minutes to install if you count the time it takes to put your ex up on the lift. Just sayin.
I just assumed the stealerships always rapped people.. (no disrespect to your family)
I have a good recommendation for an independent mechnic. He is sending quote in a.m.
Why does everyone always add value to work being done at the dealership when buying used vehicles then if consensus is to go with an independent mechanic? I knew we'd pay more I guess but seems value is placed on quality or consistency with dealership work.
That "value" is not based on quality or consistency. It is based on proof the parts were changed out (in the computer/documented/verifiable), and that "value" is only if the dealership mechanic knew what he was doing. That "value" you mention is fast becoming a thing of the past...if it hasn't already...due to the behaviors of a lot of service managers trying to earn extra money off uninformed/unsuspecting vehicle owners. Parts managers are exhibiting the same predatory behavior in my neck of the woods.

Will post update.
No offense taken.
People may ask more for a used vehicle that has been dealer maintained but just the fact they paid to have a dealer do repairs beyond warranty work should be a key insight into those people's understanding of the car biz. There is no real value to "dealer maintained" Any additional value garnered from being serviced would come from complete service records. Independent shop or dealer. A paper trail of records may hold value to some buyers.
The one benifit I can see to having a dealer do work on a out of warranty vehicle is Dealers live and die by their customer survey report cards. A Dealer will go to great lengths to make things right and drop the bull**** once you file a report with your states B.A.R.
B.A.R. Does not have much leverage over independent shops.
Good deal on the new dampener however , If there is still play in the steering wheel then it's hard to understand how the rest of the front end parts look good. Something is worn out and causing play and it needs to be figured out.
NO formal lift here. I did the V code conversion in the front for about 1.25" lift. Will be going to 08 SD axles soon, and that will lift me a couple of inches over what I am at now.
