My project is to install a Wireless Camera to the back of my Enclosed Trailer. I have watched several YouTube Video's or the scant amount of them. Anyway, they seem to all scavenge the 12V power from the Running Lights. I'm not a fan of this arraignment as to have to have my Running lights On to energize the camera.
Can I run a Hot Wire from the Trailer Junction Box Battery Terminal to the back of the trailer direct? What size gauge wire should I use? And, will the Run of wire need an ON/OFF switch inline as not to have the trailer battery continually feed the Camera when the trailer is unhooked from the truck?
If your tow vehicle has a 7 plug hookup there's a wire for backup lights. It is usually the center pin. Is this a camera you want on all the time or only when backing?
Depending on the camera, they hardly pull any current running off the running lights. I'd run 14 gauge wire. 16 gauge would also be okay.
Thanks guys, Yes there is a Hot from the batteries, truck and trailer, that I could use to power the camera. My question is more of the... How do I Un-power the camera when parked? Install an On/Pff switch between the Battery and Camera? Rather than take the camera off the trailer. My thinking is not to drain down one of the batteries.
Here is the Wiring Schematics from the Manufacturer.
if you don't want to tether it to the truck in any way, yes you have to use the trailer battery for power and yes you will need a switch to turn it off and on. 14 ga. Will be more than ample.
What would be nifty is if Ford could come out with a setup, that would allow you to use a backup camera, attached to a trailer, that when you go into reverse, would override the backup camera above the tailgate. Hmmm
Ok, I'm a New-Bee when it comes to Enclosed Trailers..... from the Wiring Schematic provided from the Manufacturer of my Trailer, it's obvious that the Battery doesn't charge when hooked up to the Truck. Duh! Ok, If I hook up an Observation/Backup camera to go cross country, surly the battery will end up dead along the way. I'm working on a charging system of sorts now or at least a good HOT to run the Camera. The FORD Owners Manual that I got with the truck, doesn't include a 7-Pin Diagram to work from. Can someone please provide a 7-Pin Plug Diagram with the Wiring colors that is propitiatory to FORD? and what the wires activate on a trailer. My Trailer Schematic seems a bit convoluted. Thanks. (Frustrating)
Hmm, my trailer battery gets charged when hooked up to truck.
If you look at the Trailer Schematics on mine provided by the Trailer Manufacturer..... the wire comes from the Brake Controller and bypasses the battery unless the Safety Brake is pulled to apply the battery power to the brakes in an emergency. Tomorrow, I will hook up the trailer to see if the battery does get charged.... But, I don't see it as how the Schematics portray it otherwise.

On my 2017 I can switch the OEM dash screen to the camera that is on the back of the trailer.
HouseMouse, I wired up a backup camera on my old truck and I powered it off of the reverse wire. I only needed it on during reverse operations so this worked well.

That's what I did on my 06. I really like it when hooking up the trailer.

Did you set that up or was it an option for the 2017's.? I'm looking more and more at installing a camera on the rear of my enclosed trailer, but want to keep it simple. Using the OEM dash screen would be nice.

The camera came with the option I ordered on my 2017. I installed the camera myself. Once it was connected at the bumper port a new icon shows up in the camera screen.
