I've had my '68 F-100 for almost two months, has the C-4 tranny and a 240 six, all was well but then it began to shift harder, this was not normal. The roll pin thru' the shift lever was there but the die cast metal in the 'nub' was not good, was partially broken out, this being one of Ford's weaker spots, maybe poorer ideas.
I did make it home OK, parked by the shop, it was stuck, I was done. Took the steering wheel off (small puller & two bolts) then the small bolts that hold the turn signal switch. this and the wires has to come all the way out in order to get the shift collar out, I cut the two plugs off at the bottom, leaving a good inch on the two plugs, the wires are color coded.
Took the two nuts off that hold the upper collar, this exposed the shift collar, it was broken internally.
I got a new aftermarket collar on eBay for 42 bucks, very high quality and the 'nub' heavier metal, the roll pin longer, this a great improvement.
It all went back together OK, then I soldered the two plugs back on the wires, a small piece of shrink-wrap to insulate each joint, now the truck shifts as smooth as when new, the part came unpainted as shown, I painted that with a small brush later and touched thing up a little. Turn signals work fine, we are back in business again !!
Well, it was more involved that what I could write, nothing is ever easy. The worst is the two square head bolts in those slots, I used masking tape to hold them in place, otherwise it would be a nightmare putting that top part back on.
I also filed a few thousandths off the new roll pin they furnished, pressed it in with my vise. I'm hoping it never has to come apart again.
Main thing, this new collar has more metal where the roll pin goes thru', a big improvement over what Ford made. Mac's carries both real Ford collars and this aftermarket, that's the one you want.
