Im looking for a one ton pickup I was leaning towards a diesel, because of the fuel consumption and added torque. What would be the best truck to buy? I will be towing 12000lb including the weight of the trailer. I would prefer a dually.
A Ford, need I say more? Do you need the towing power of a one ton? or maybe you could go with a newer 250 with a diesel for slightly better mileage,
Part of the quistion is, are you looking for old or new, SRW or DRW? 2x4 4x4? What do you need that large a truck for. And how much are you willing to spend?
I would suggest a regular cab dually built between late 1994 to 1997 with a 7.3L Powerstroke diesel under the hood, and a 5th wheel hitch in the pickup bed.
What is your budget?
Decide exactly what you are looking for. A 1 ton DRW would be a good match for that trailer.
A Power Stroke is a must, you have to decide what cab and options (4x4) you want too. I would go on www.kbb.com or www.nada.com and get an idea of the price ranges these trucks are in.
7.3 IDI will do it but you will not like it (a fiend of mind said they tow 13,000lbs at work when he takes out their 92 superduty 7.3 IDI towing he redlines in every gear and still taking 3 miles to get to 60 miles per hour) the turbo Idi don't have that much more power 94 1/2 7.3 psd to 2002 is going to be your best bet for comfortable pulling power.
If towing is going to be the main reason for getting the truck the of course. 7.3 PSD. Dually. The only way to go. Before I ever got into the camping game I did a lot of research, talked to a lot of people, and did a lot of reading. The main line I found was just that. Even the people that had previously had diesel, and thought the didn't like the rattle would tell you that they were going back.
short dirves are not Ideal with a diesel. The turing on and off of the motor is what distroys them(More likly when when it will die). the glow plug controller will go out even sooner and you will have to replace glow plugs more often (9 dollars for 1 glow plug). If you run it all day driving around its not bad for them to daily drive just don't go 2 miles and shut it off with out letting it warm up all the way to operating tempeture.
Diesels are real popular in Europe. Some cars there are real nice with Diesel, like Mercedes. They somehow make it run as quite as anything else. I always wondered why it didn't catch up here.
Myself, I have null experience with diesel.
Always wondered, but there must be reasons why it didn't become popular. Lack of power and poor acceleration maybe?
kind of You don't want it to Idle over 20 minutes or you'll have a lot of unburnt fuel in the cylinders I forget what its called but I know its not good for the motor.
