Hey guys
I am starting body work on a 77 f150. the fenderwells have a little rot rust that goes all the way throug the fender. I am talking rear fenders here. My problem i s that behind the fender is another piece of metal that looks kinda of like its a insert. It sits about a 1/2 - 3/4 on an inch away from the actual fender. When i went to grind the fender i noticed lots of sand and dirt between the two. Should i just cut this "insert out and leave it out or what? I cant clean the back side of the fender cause its in the way.
THanks
David
That's probably the brace that goes from the wheel opening over to the inner bed (wheelhouse). That little bracket is what held all the dirt and moisture and caused all the rust in the first place. If you take it out permanently the bed side will be too loose and may flap around. You can cut it out CAREFULLY, and re-install it after your fender repairs are made though. When you're all done paint the back side of the fenders with some kind of rust preventive paint like Zero-Rust, Chassis Saver, POR-15, Rust Bullet, etc. It's money well spent.
Well since i couldn't get the pics i tookit to a couple of body shops and they said that need ed patch panels cause someom\ne else had already done body work on it and there was more rust than i had originally seen. The edges on the fender were a little rounded. But i might have found a bed to buy, So if you guys could keep it in your prayers that this bed would work out for me i would appreciate it.
Thanks
David
the piece you are referring to is called a wheel well i believe,,,the can be bought aftermarket as well as the fender itself,,,,,,,the wells cost about 70 bucks each and the fenders about 370 each i think,,,,,,,,,,,,,or you could do what i did, i bought a 4x8 sheet of 18gauge galvanized sheet metal , cut out all the cancer, shaped pieces and welded them in. A little bondo on the outside and presto good as new
