I didn't see any data on 7.3 idi swaps into Excursions (or Superduty either). Just a handful of 7.3 installs using 99+ donors.
With the mild weather we had last winter, people are offloading their plow trucks left and right for very cheap. I can snag a good running 7.3 idi with Zf5 and D60 front axle for $1,000 to $1,500 pretty easily. The PSD version runs about $2500. The body panels are rotted, but they are perfect donor trucks. with many of them 150-200k motors. And I'm always on the lookout for a 99-03 Superduty to do a more modern swap.
Kinda kicking around snagging one and swapping out the V-10. I plan on having this Excursion for quite some time, and want to start longer drives. Better MPG and the manual trans are very appealing. I'm at 91k miles with zero issues on the V-10/4R100 combo. I figure I could sell a D60, my current motor/trans and actually come out ahead monetarily.
My X is a 3rd vehicle, so it's easily available to take off the road for a bit. If anyone has any links to a guide, or someones previous experience I'd really appreciate it. The Diesel bug has bit me again something fierce.
Less horsepower and torque than the v10 for hopes of better economy sounds like an a no brainer to me. If you've really got the diesel bug a 7.3 psd swap would be the only logical way I see keeping your ex. It would be more expensive but make much more sense. It's either that or sell yours and buy one with a psd.
Just spitballing because like I said I can get a 90's 7.3 for cheap. Just found a nice '97 PSD for $2k
I agree going with a '99+ is only real "smart" way to go. Keeping the rig though, I got lucky and found this one with only 90k miles. Virtually no rust and all the normal X complaints. I'd never get into a factory PSD X for any reasonable price
In my opinion, you would be a fool to ruin a low mileage v10 excursion unless it's beat up junk. If you have to have a straight shift, buy all the parts from a wrecked gasser super duty, and have driveshafts made. If you want a diesel, get a premium price for your excursion while gas is cheap and then by you a diesel model. Again, then you can swap it to manual.
I've had idi's, they don't compare to a v10, and in an excursion, the fuel mileage will not be that good.
