Hey all. I have been searching this forum and not found my solution, so figured I should register and get some ideas. 2010 v6 4wd.
I have some growling in my front end. I got the truck in the air and neither wheel has any wobble (to check the front wheel hub assembly).
I got under the truck and disconnected the large plug going into the T/C. Still noisy.
Any ideas? This truck used to be so quiet, but a couple years ago I had uneven tires that caused the 4wd to be on a ton. I just replaced all 4 a few weeks ago and that did not change the noise.
Is it possible that a bearing is still the culprit even without wobble? I can weave right and left and cannot notice it getting better or worse.
Also noticing my gas mileage dipping over the years, I am down to low 18s/high 17s with somewhat highway miles (2 miles of my commute around 35mph and the other 18ish going around 55 with 1 or 2 stops).
wheel bearings are a very common source of "nosie" in the front end. The bearings run out of greased ( dry) and start to howl. It could be 1-5000 miles before you have excessive play in the bearings. Best test is to remove the brake caliper so no drag, then rotate the tires by hand and compare left and right.
I have a 2007 Sport Trac, 2wd and have had to replace 4 front hub assemblies, 3 on the right side and 1 on the left side, and now need to replace the right side again. This is a bad design, the first hub assembly failed at around 65,000 miles. They definitely have a grinding noise when going out, you can get new ones on eBay for $45 to $110, and I have not found any brand to be better than others, most of the aftermarket ones only last around 30,000 miles, so might as well use the cheap ones. I have a pair of hub assemblies being shipped to me right now that were only $68 for the pair with free shipping, and they would be the same ones for your Sport Trac as they all use the same hub assemblies in both 2wd and 4wd from 2007 to 2010.
