1987 idi turbo
I just bought this truck. It has 70k original miles with a banks power turbo kit on it. I can't not go d any Info on this turbo system. It was factory installed by the dealership because it has a sticker under the hood that says so. Any info on the turbo systems before the sidewinder kit would be great

If it is banks, it's not considered to be the "factory" installed turbo to my knowledge. Lots of dealerships back then were doing conversions of all sorts though. There are two main types of banks turbos used on the idis, one is waste gated one is not. The waste gated version is much better than the older non spooling cavernous exhaust housing type non waste gated version.
Because you likely have the waste gated version, I won't go into much detail on the non wg version. Confirm that is what you have though...it's good for 15 psi or so.
What else would you like to know?

The idis aren't great at spooling turbos. But, you can adjust the fuel screw on the passenger side of the injection pump, it's relatively easy to get to. You can Google how to adjust the fuel screw and tons will come up....that will help your turbo spool. you should also check your pump timing (will require specialty timing tools to check it precisely). By ear, it should be nice and clackety at idle, like marbles flying around in there. Timing too soft, and it will be quiet like a gasser.

that is what banks called their "first generation" sidewinder turbo. it is not waste gated. it is good for between 12 and 16 lbs boost, depending on exhaust. 3 inch or larger exhaust system with no muffler will see up to 16 lbs boost under load with fuel turned up. with a muffler, you will only see around 8-10 lbs boost under load.
it is also NOT factory installed.
dealer probably sent the truck out and had it installed before delivering to the original purchaser, or the owner took it to the dealer to have it sent out for turbo install.

See the little needle move on the leftmost gauge? That's a 0-15 psi boost gauge swinging her needle from 0-9 psi with a quick snap of the throttle going up a slight incline, running near empty.
This is not with the first gen,non waste gate banks as shown here however but with the second gen, wastegated banks. It's much more responsive than the earlier kits.

Spooling the wastegated banks turbo quickly is less about the idis ability to spool, and more about the fact that it is a tiny turbo (easy to spool) with an efficient exhaust housing.
I'm not taking anything away from idi's here (i love them) but indirect injection is inferior to di particularly, but not limited to, this aspect. Gen 1 di pickups (heui and poppet style injectors) spool larger turbos just as easy as the idi spools the little banks, common rails even moreso.
