Flathead valve seats
I'm slowly rebuilding a 1952 F1. I removed the heads and luckily only broke off one head bolt that I'll remove later. The inside is pretty clean considering. When it was running 25+ years ago it ran smooth and no smoke. It sat in a field up until a few years ago and collected dirt, grass and rat nests inside. I noticed 2 valve seats a little loose. Was wondering if I gotta take the motor to a machine shop to have the seats replaced? As strong as it is, could I just smear some JB Weld under the seats and push them back in?
If so clean the seat bores real clean and buy new seats, cheap enought nothing to loose.
Then put the new seats in your freezer overnite, and they will drop or slightly tap in, then
they will expand when they warm up. As long as the seat bores are good I don't think the
machine shop isn't needed at this point unless the bores are bugged up > then they will have to be bored oversize. I think you have earlier eng. cause they did away with seats
sometime around 1950 or 51. plus or minus. which is no big deal. My tip if you are
thinking Machine Shop; do a lot of research, cause now these days this operation is done 99% on overhead valves. Inline valve in block no problem but V blocks of any make you have to come up with a jig so the deck is 90 degrees to the mill table. What I mean by inlines 6cyl 4 cyl the bottom of the block is clamped to the table so the top, the
deck is already 90 degrees. And then the block has to be stripped and cleaned before
they will touch it. However eng rebuild shops have expensive machines to handle any
block but its "if you can find such a shop" in your area. This reply is pointed to the
local mom and pop shops like myself with no $500,000 machine. sam
