Intermittent rear wiper?

Is there any way to make the rear wiper work intermittently instead of just being on all the time?

Thanks

Yep, switch it on and off. Sorry, it is not a variable like the main wipers.

I haven't seen one a while (well, I haven't been looking) but there used to be add-on controllers to add intermittent functions to cars that did not have any originally. They amount to a a small black box wired into the wiper switch that you would fasten to your dashboard somewhere. The ones I've seen installed do work, but look a bit cheesy.

GypsyR:

Thanks for the reply. Do you know what it was called, so I can search j.c. Whitney etc? I'll probably set it for 1 speed, then bury it behind the dash.

Intermittent rear wiper?

Maybe some of you electrical gurus out there can figure out how to adapt a Ford Taurus wagon's intermittent relay into the Aero's wiring. I just drove the company car's new-ish wagon and noticed it's a fixed intermittent.

I did this many years ago for my VW Fox - making its fixed intermittent wipers variable by taking something from a Passat or some such higher model VW...

I was wondering why you just couldn't splice in one of the small flasher blubs. When you turn on the rear whipers it should turn the power to the motor on/off.

Or how about the control box off of a string of Xmas lights. It makes them blink slower or faster.

They do make them in 12v

Just some thoughts.....

I was just wondering......Is the intermitter built into the wiper motor or is it a stand alone control box?
Because why couldn't someone tie the rear wipers into the same circuit as the front. More than likely if your turning on the rear you'll have the fronts on too.
Have both come on when you turn on the fronts.

Just wondering.

Intermittent rear wiper?

Well, I finally got the part from JCWhitney. I bought the one with the 'mist' button (if I had to do it again, I would have got it without it). The instructions were a little unusual but after a little while with a ohm meter I figured out which wires were which. My original intent was to set it then bury it under the dash (unit is too big too mount anywhere on dash in my opinion), however this presented a problem. Once the unit is wired it is always 'on' (cycling) even though the wiper is not on, unless you physically turn it off. This was not possible with my intended configuration. My solution was to install a switch beneath the rear wiper switch that controls the power to the new intermit unit. As a result here's how it functions:

turn on wiper or washer
turn off new switch
wiper/washer functions normally

turn on wiper
turn on new switch
wiper operates intermittently (I have unit set to about 5 secs & buried it under dash)

when finished turn off both switches

It seems to work great & the switch I found at Radio Shack looks like it came from the factory.

Total cost: approx $25
Total time: approx 1 hour

Now I just have to pray for rain.

Sounds like it worked out OK. The main problem I had with the things was the gawky looking box. Sounds like you worked out a slick solution for that. Fixed interval doesn't sound bad at all for the price. I don't suppose we REALLY need variable intermittent on the rear anyway.
