I blew the head gasket in my 67 f10p with what I've been told is a 390 fe. 4 speed with granny(reverse is down and to the right) I was going to just replace the head gasket and go... then I had to rebuild the heads.. now I think I'm going to have a local shop do a short block, and now because I'm pulling the motor I should replace the clutch, and it's all adding up. So.... should I put a bigger cam in when they do the short block? What clutch do I use for my daily?( I want to be ably to haul if need be.) also I want to change the tranny, what swap could I do with a bunch of fab work? I hate the granny gear and won't to know what my options are. Have a couple steering box questions if someone wants to help with that too..
Heck yes...just use an rv cam if you want a good daily driver. I always replace a clutch when it is torn apart. Bump the compression up to 9.5:1 and with that cam you will have a nice powerful daily drive type engine. But why get rid of a granny gear if you want to do some heavy hauling?
Check the stroke on your supposed 390 as FE blocks are the same. 352 and 360 are 3.50". 390 is 3.78". Put the engine on top dead center, and pull plugs 1 and 4. Stick something thin done the hole to the piston, and make a make on the rod. Do the same for plug 4. Measure between the marks for the stroke. For an FE, there is only two choices for a replacement 5 speed manual trans: a TKO from ModernDrivelines, or a NVG 4500 with a low 1st gear.
