Hi, I have a 1984 Ford F-250 with a 6.9L and yesterday I drove it to work and it did fine. But on my way back home every time I would slow down for a red light or stop sign until I got out of town it would die and I would have to start it again. Or when I was pulling away from being stopped in first it would try and die if I eased into it I had to ease off the clutch and smash the accelerator down to keep it running. Does anyone know what might be happening or how to fix it?
Fuel issues... sounds like you are running out of fuel.
Were you around 1/4 tank? The fuel pickups like to fail after this many years.
Also, it might be a good time to replace the lift pump on the side of the block; cheap and can't hurt.
I was at 1/2 a tank but by the time I was home I was at almost a 1/4 only because trying to get going from stopped it smoked a lot since I couldn't ease into it without it dying
You need a new fuel pickup most likely. $30 off ebay.
The hard part is getting to the top of the tank; either drop the tank or pull the bed.
annoying part is I just put the bed back on but depending on how flexible the part is I have about 6 inches between the top of the tank and the bottom of my flatbed
I have a 85 F-250 with the 6.9 and it did the same thing. I ended up taking the tank of and found the the fuel pick screen had pretty much just fell apart. I bought on on amazon for around 25 bucks. Been looking to go ahead and do the same to my rear tank and i found that LMC Truck had the best buy on the part. Here is the link to the part if it helps. Truck Parts and Truck Accessories
