1st Tow with new 2017 F-350 PSD, 18,000 5th wheel, my impressions

Freaking awesome!!!! Felt like it wasn't even back there! Now i'm coming from a 05 F-350 Diesel Dually (super cab) with 4.30 gears (tow boss package I think it was called). I averaged 10.2 miles on the 200 mile trip. Unfortunately no big hills (LOL) that will come in our trip to upstate NY. Anyways night and day compared from my old truck. Tow Haul mode and Exhaust break was Fracking awesome stopping it. I also had so much power to spare! Hooked up I was a little nose high with the 5th wheel, not to bad going to leave it alone. Towing a 37 foot Heavy Excel 5th wheel.

Take care everyone,
Eddie

These 6.7s are just beasts and really make it a pleasure to pull with. Wait till you get a good steep climb and it feels like it wants to just keep gaining speed.

Really can't wait! We have friends that live in Schoharie NY, we live in Mass (unfortunately, can't wait to get out!) the last few years we stopped taking the 5th wheel out there due to my 2005 was getting tired. There are some real nice hills out there to tackle. Looking forward to that trip! On a couple of hills I would have my peddle stomped to the floor in the far right truckers lane limping up the hill in my 05 (poor old guy)

I know what you mean about age of truck. Before the 6.7 my 08 f350 V10 with 4.30 rear end was starting to get a little long in the tooth at 286k plus pulling an 05 cameo at 14k. Upgraded both truck and 5th wheel and traveling the west in the mountains is a challenge plus on the down hill with the exhaust brake and tow haul very little manual braking is needed even on the step grades.

Yeah, these trucks rock. My last rig was a '01 F350 DRW 7.3, 6 spd manual. I thought I was the boss pulling my Weekend Warrior over Donnner Summit (7K Elevation) at 60. But this truck would kill that one. First tow with the '17 was my new 35' 5th (Est 10K or so) from SLC to Reno. Only question was how fast did I want to go. During both of the two small climbs on that run, I was passing cars who couldn't cut it..

We just got back yesterday from a 3 week trip to western NY pulling a 12,000 lb 5th wheel. (Northern Shenandoah resident in VA). I determine what speed I tow, not the truck running gear. I set the cruise control on 65 mph, and just sit back and enjoy the ride. The mountains of PA don't faze the PSD, with very few down-shifts needed.

Yes, 65 is fast enough. I can cover ground, get good fuel mileage and not over stress the trailer tires.

These new 6.7's are amazing...I pull my Fuzion 371 at 62 to 65 mph and get up to 10.4 mpg. Always have enough power to pull these tall bridges over the Mississippi River...no mountains or hills in Louisiana so in the tow haul mode and with the braking system on I can usually slow down the 14K pound trailer easily. Going around the slow pokes is a breeze with the pulling power of the 4.10 gearing when you mash down on the pedal and the extra stability of the DRW's is great to have also. Very impressed so far!
