I bought a 1998 navigator for real cheap, only catch is that the previous owner said he lost the key so for some reason he started pulling the ignition/column apart. The ring the reads the chip in the key is gone and everything is mangled. My question is, if I buy a new steering column for it with the key, will I have to reprogram the computer to work with the new key? If not, how should I go about this? Thank you in advanced!
will I have to reprogram the computer to work with the new key?
yes, of course you will need to reprogram PATS if you come in with different keys UNLESS you also transfer over the PATS module from the donor vehicle. The 98 expy uses a stand-alone PATS module.
You'd probably be better off getting a complete lock cylinder set (doors and ignition) that will come with pre-cut keys and replace the transceiver for the PATS system. If you replace the whole steering column, even if it comes with keys, you still have a different lock on the door(s).
I forgot to mention that the previous found the key after wrecking the column, so I can still get in with the key. If I held the old key up to the new transceiver while cranking it with the new key, would that work?
You can use a Bluetooth ELM327 adapter plugged into the diagnostic port and Forscan to program a new key.
I just did this a few weeks ago for my 2006 Navigator since it came with only one key. I had a new key cut at the Ford dealer, brought it home then did the PATS programming in my garage. You need the Forscan program on a laptop, the app is a lite version. Both version are free.

i have a vgate plug in adapter and torque pro app that I use for my 6.0 diagnostics, wouldnthe vgate work with the program you mentioned?

I have an OBDLink MX from ScanTool. It is an ELM327 derivative that also has the capability to read the MS Can bus as well as the others. I use it with Torque and FORscan Lite apps. To use the key programming you need the PC/Mac version of FORScan. Invaluable tool.
I install the expedition steering column, made a non-chipped key for the ignition. When I hold the original key next to the ignition while turning it on, if the antitheft light is not blinking, the vehicle start. Thank you all for your helpful words and I hope my experience also help you guys.

I would also like to point out that I am not illiterate, i used the talk to text feature on my phone and I forgot to review it before posting.
We are not here to judge you. Great workaround, but not 100% necessary. I had only one key for my 2006 Navigator. I was able to re-program it and a new Ford chipped key with no issues.

i had had to replace the column because it was torn apart, the key tumbler was pulled out and broken, and it was a mess.
