Got the MSD back, put it in the truck, it started and ran, so we did some leaning out of the carb (was too rich by far) - lower power valve, jet sizes and pump. Got about 40 minutes of running time, and it died.

Had to have it towed back - followed the MSD tech support directions to diagnose and the module is fried - the one they first said was bad, then said was good.

I think we are done with MSD distributors.

Sorry to here it, Paul... Makes you wonder what a Petronix and a stock distributor would do.

It was a Petronix and a stock distributor I had in it that was acting up. That is what prompted this. The Petronix wasn't the issue, the old distributor is wonky.

I don't think there are any new old style distributors, so I think I'll pursue a Duraspark.

Just sayin'. It's points, but take the Petronix out of your old one and transplant. Wonder what the curve is though.

Thanks - was looking around to find one. Curve was on my mind as well. There is a guy here who can do a re-curve, he did the one that is failing, but he is an hour away (four hours when you drop it and then go get it) and he costs about $200.

Faron Rhoads will sell a new Duraspark for about the same money as the rebuilt part and the recurve, and it is curved properly.

Having said that - I can just move the parts over and it should be about the same. Can confirm it with a timing light revving the engine.

Well - the Summit price was low enough that I'd hardly bother, but up here the same part is $160, so I'm taking it apart.

IMO that's what I would do and just be done with it.

Actually I have the old Motorcraft apart and looking to fix it. Left Faron a message and sent him an email and he has not responded.

Can't buy it if he isn't selling!

Ha I hear ya. Sometimes it takes a while to get a response from a lot of the people who we esteem in the FE community. I know they're busy with their business and their own projects and rides though. Sometimes it's worth a little wait, and other times you just gotta do what you gotta do
