I'd say that You'll have to mount the latch at the back side as well, otherwise
the latch is too long and you wont get enough pressure to keep the gate shut firmly. So in my opinion - mount the latch on the back of the end post,
sticking the bolts trought the post (as you can see on my truck). Before boring the holes, you can shove the latch outward until the shackle can be opened easy but with still enough pressure. Maybe the end of the latch will
overlap the end post to the side, but that's no problem...
My 1954 f100 has the original chains and latches... these pics look right,but i would suggest ,when you hang the crooked part with the chain thru the latch, instead of bringing crook straight down , bring the crook from the bottom up and the chain will never bounce out of the latch goin down rough roads
I was taught that when you chain up the tailgate you should bring the hooks up from the bottom and have them flip over instead of just dropping the chain down from the top. This helps prevent the chain from bouncing up and out on a rough road.
