What and where did this come from
Bought a 54 Ford p/u that has been customized a lot and the speedo doesn't work. Looking at the speedometer assembly,it's not a unit for a stock 54 p/u.
Anyone identify ? I looked at 42 thru 66 pickups and none are the same...also looked at chevy.
Thanks in advance to all

Trip meters were fairly rare, afaik. Thinking more upscale car. Actually those rolling tube speedos are pretty much the same as a regular one. Speedo cable driven by gear in trans. Cable spins magnetic drum in speedo causing it to turn. Instead of a needle yours has a rolling drum that is marked like the seam of a can of biscuits. The magnetic drum is at one end and attached to the end of the 'biscuit tube' making the colored seam appears as a laterally moving pointer. Like any speedo begin with checking the cable for spinning while the rear wheels are turning. Not unusual for a cable to unravel due to lack of lube over the years. Or, disconnect cable from trans and spin it with small drill. If speedo doesn't turn.... well, you were going to have to pull it out anyway, may as well take a peek inside. Since the tube spins by magnetism it could just be it is off of its pins (axles) or dirty and stuck, etc.

Looks like a pretty nice truck. I take it from your comments that it probably has a GM driveline? Not too worry, we're a pretty forgiving bunch around here. Yea sure, we have some die hard, all original use nothing but FoMoCo parts kind of guys but we also have full on blow your mind custom guys also. And we all seem to get along.
My truck is GM powered also, I have a 49 Ford with a Caddy 500 engine
Please tell us a bit about it, oh, and welcome to the board!
