Pulling a 32 foot Contender

Hey guys...I have a buddy who just bought a brand new 32 foot contender. He has an 05 F350 6.0 which pulls it just fine however he wants to buy a new 6.2 truck- he doesnt want diesel anymore- but is worried that it's too much boat for the 6.2 truck to get up a steep boat ramp. So he wants to use my 16 F-250 CCSB 6.2 4x4 with 3.73 gears to test it out...gee thanks buddy!! So anyways...the boat, trailer, fuel and misc come out right about to 10K-11K depending on how much fuel is abord.

Silly question- my truck should be able to haul this boat out in 4hi no problem...right? Driving around is no biggie I know the truck can handle it but pulling that much weight out of the water up a 10 degree incline has me wincing...

I had a 6.2 gasser, and here is what I think......pull the gear selector all the way down to "1" and ease into the throttle, I will bet your truck will walk that boat right up the ramp.
Good luck.

If you have a Locking rear Differential, Lock it in. Slippery Ramps are a challenge regardless of the tow vehicle. With your 6.2 and 3:73's I'd use 4wd Low-Range. Your truck will easily walk that Boat up a Ramp.

Thanks for the tips. This is the first time I'm worried about not having a diesel.

You will not need low range. If you have manual hubs, lock them in first. That way if you lose traction you can grab 4X4 easily.

You will have plenty of power, these transmissions have plenty of gear reduction in first gear!! If it is traction you are concerned about, there will not be much difference between you gasser and a diesel.....no difference on just the rear wheels, and because the diesel engine is heavier, a little difference on the front axle; but if you are concerned just locker it in 4X4 as previously stated. I don't think you will need low range, but that is upto you.

stop.

are you 5th wheeling this, goosneck, or trailer hitch....if trailer hitch..what class hitch and what is the rating of the ball.

I would have pulled it with my v-10 f-250 but it had a class 5 hitch (2.5 shank) with an 18,000lb rated ball and overleaf springs that added 1500 to my tounge weight.

not hearing the right questions and there are possible wrong assumptions.

11k trailer would have about a 1500lb tounge weight....make sure you have a class 5 hitch (2.5 shank) and not a class iii/4 hitch (2 inch shank) with a maqx tounge of 1000lbs.

im scared.

please tell me you have a 5th wheel or gooseneck or class 4 hitch with max tounge of 1500lb and 18000lb ball.

Only about 8% tongue weight...weighed with a Sherline LM5000. So my stock hitch is plenty. Good point though!

Good luck.
I think "2" would be better to prevent wheel slip.

There's nothing wrong with using 4lo and 4wd. That's what it's for. All torque, little tire spin. I don't see any problem with the truck handling it. The only issue I've encountered launching boats is the ramp itself. If you have a nice concrete ramp with grooves cut/formed in it'll pull it out easy peasy. If it's an old ramp with slick asphalt or algae on concrete, you would have problems. But at that point, any truck with a sizable boat would have problems.

Pics of the Contender!! If I had $350-400k that's where I'd drop it too.
