92 and 96 Auto tranny same?

I have a 90 Bronco 2 with a manual transmission. I bought a 92 Explorer for the 4.0 and the auto transmission. I also acquired a 96 Explorer Limited that has a rebuilt tranny in it. Are the two transmissions the same? Will The 96 bolt up to the 92 4.0? The 92 4.0 has been rebuilt already so thats the engine i am going with. Has anyone just shortened an explorer frame to use on a bronco 2? Sorry for all the questions but I will admit I dont know Explorers very well at all. Thank you for your time,Rick.

Go to http://www.hollanderparts.com/ and plug in your make/model/year info. The results will return parts in various salvage yards that interchange across years and models. You may have to expand your search results beyond 50 miles or whatever the default setting is to get enough results.

Or, just call up a junkyard and see if they'll tell you. Most subscribe to Hollander Interchange. You might even be able to find it at your local library.

Short answer- No, you can't use the 96 transmission.
Long answer: 91-94 Explorers use the A4LD auto transmission. 95-2001 Explorers use the 4r/5r55e transmissions in the V6 models, and the 4r70w in the V8 models. (You didn't say which engine the 96 Explorer has. It could be either a 4.0 V6 (same as the 92 engine) or a 5.0 V8. Since it's a Limited, there's a really good chance it has a V8.) If it has the V8, it has a different bellhousing bolt pattern and won't even bolt up to a 4.0. It's also electronically controlled which the 92 computer doesn't support.

The 4r/5r55e transmissions are based off the A4LD and will physically bolt in. The main difference is they're completely electronically controlled and again, the 92 computer cannot control them. It would be a huge undertaking to swap all the wiring and computers trying to get one to work.
