Question Iac

I am wondering if the ICA, when working properly moves smoothly or dose it move in small steps? I was testing mine to see what it actually did. I hooked up 12volts to it and it moves about a milimeter each time I hit the 12v. Is this how it is suppoed to work or not?

Thanks,
lowjo

The IAC moves in different paces, depending on how much current is provided to it. It is a good idea to take it off and clean it every now and then. I clean mine when I clean my air filter (I have a K&N), and I also clean the mass air at the same time.

In an older manual I saw it noted that the IAC has an internal diode that can be damaged if you don't get the polarity right on the bench. Not sure if that diode is there but I always use a brake light in series to limit the current when testing solenoids. The IAC is pulsed at a frequency with a duty cycle that varies. This is what gives the proportion of the valve opening.
