My 93 Explorer has begun to act up on me. It has developed a vibration. When you get above 35 mph its very noticeable to the driver through the steering wheel. I had just driven from Washington state to Arizona to go to college and there were some extremely rough sections so i thought i had just lost a wheel weight. Today I had the tires rebalanced and it made a slight difference but didn't cure it. Just before I left, about a month and 3000 miles ago all the brakes were replaced. When braking the vibration does get slightly worse. I'm not sure but I thought brake related vibrations were only when you were applying the brakes? I only have a few hours on Saturdays to really get it worked so I'm hoping to get it a little narrowed down before I go in. Any thoughts? As far as details about the rig its a 4x4, has 182,000 miles, when the brakes were replaced I had the auto hubs switched to manual. The shop that did the work has a good reputation and my parents had gone there many times. Thank you for any help!
It's been about a week now since i noticed the vibration and it will probably be until next friday or afternoon or saturday before I can get it looked at again. Do you think there would be any concern commuting about 3 miles each day? All of the driving is below 50 mph? Thanks again.
I know this sounds simple, but when they ballanced the tires did they check for a bent rim? Also when better shops ballance, they check for road force variance which tests the tire-rim combo as it spins with a roller simulating the vehicle's weight on the tire. I think its also called "indexing". I just got rid of a Mazda pickup,(2002) that they couldn't get the vibration out of. I think it was in the drivetrain, (trans or rearend). Being that your truck has that many miles on it, it seems to me they should be able to find the problem pretty easily. Good luck!!
Well I just got back from Midas and they only had a short amount of time before closing. So they quickly took a test drive and looked over the suspension, and on tuesday I'm going back to have it done more thoroughly but they're suspecting it is an out of round front tire. They're toyo open country at's that i've put about 25,000 miles on them. I don't know if this common problem with these tires or not? I'm just hoping tire replacement isn't neccessary.
