New owner

Greetings,
just became the 2nd owner of a 2000 V10 XLT with only 75k on the ticker. Picked it up from a dealer for just $7500. In fantastic shape, but want to make some changes. It's rolling on new

35s and a BDS lift. Best guess is an 8 or 10in kit because it has 6in blocks and about 6-8 leafs in the spring packs. I'd like to remove it all and return it to stock or the V/B code springs. It's just too damn tall. I'm 6'3 and have a hard time climbing into this thing. I can only imagine what it's like for the fam. Here's a few pics. Tell me what I need to do this.

Greetings back to you, welcome !!

Nice rig, good price too!

I would call Junior at ATS and have him set you up. Just did a 3-4" lift with 35's. He supplied everything I needed after I outlined my needs.

Fill out your profile, tell us where you are located!

Not sure if I want to keep the 35s. Pretty sure I have 3.73 axles and I do tow our boat and toy hauler alot in the summer. Guess it will all depend on how spendy it is to take the lift off and downsize in tires.

A fresh wash, pin stripe removal, V10 badge removal, front grill replacement, and new headlights would really make your Ex look sharp.

Looks like you got a great deal... with easy maintenance, you'll enjoy years of service out of your Excursion!

there are people that might be willing to swap on Craigslist. I have seen quite a few people that do that around here. also I'm not a expert at gear ratios at all but with those gears and that ratio you should be fine with the boat and toy hauler. I have 3.73 on mine but it's a different animal being that mines a 7.3l. anyways others will chime in and give you better info but either way good looking truck and look forward to seeing the different stuff you do to it

Seen a couple of them in my area, but this is by far the biggest truck in town. DJ'd a wedding last night and loading up my gear was "interesting," to say the least. Will see how it does pulling the boat to the lake today. Gotta test out the new wakeboard!

On a side note, I have a ScanGauge II set up on the dash to monitor all the vehicle sensors. Trans temps stay cool (<180°F) and my mileage has been surprisingly good at 11-12mpg with those tires. My 3/4t square body Chevy can't do that.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but check the date code on those tires. They're the original KO1 design based off the sidewall pattern. Last new member we had with 'new' KO1's checked his at my prodding and discovered two of them were 8 years old.

BlendMount has a kit for that ScanGauge, I have mine mounted above the rear new mirror. I'm guessing you've already been to their website for all the X-gauge coding and such to round out the monitoring potential?

If you're planning on towing, especially on the bigger tires, consider dropping in a 6.0 trans cooler, significantly larger than what you've got and it'll knock that 180° temp down to the 150-165° range.

Congrats on joining the family, the V10 is a respectable and reliable motor - no matter how much **** I talk to y'all

I like to keep my SCII in directly line-of-sight with my other gauges on the dash, so its just mounted on the column. Nothing fancy. I will definitely look into the 6.0 cooler. Towed my boat to one of our local lakes yesterday and the trans got warmer than I hoped. We have a pretty gnarly pass to climb and those 35s didn't help to keep things cool. I topped 190F for a brief moment climbing and the V10 was working to keep 55mph. Yeah, I'll look into that cooler right away. My boat ain't that heavy!

Date code on the tires shows late 2011 for all of them. Not great, but I do have the warranty paperwork that was included with the truck. Just purchased earlier this spring. Still, once the lift is removed, I have no intentions of keeping them. I'm going back to stock or +1. I have emailed 2 different 4x4 shops in my area for a quote. I'd normally do this myself, but I don't have a floor jack or stands tall enough for the job. Depending on the quotes I get back, it may be worth it to buy what I need. I know that V/B code springs aren't expensive, but the labor will likely be pretty high.

Will definitely look into the 6.0 cooler. As for the tires, they are all late-2011. I don't intend to keep them once the lift is removed and will go back to a more stock size, maybe +1. If I have a problem while still on the vehicle, I do have warranty paperwork since they were purchased earlier this Spring.

With the 35"s your speedometer will be off by about 12% or so, reading low unless the PCM has been recalibrated for the taller tires. Compare your speedo reading with a GPS to verify your speed, if its off your Odometer and Lie-O-Meter will also be off by similar amounts.
If you do have the common 3.73 gears with those 35" tires your towing abilities will be less than impressive, something like an effective 3.37 isn't going to make the rev happy V-10 smile. Depending on the weight of the boat and or toyhauler and your terrain you may not be able to maintain the use of OD while towing. If you find it constantly hunting between Drive and OD them just lock out OD on the shifter button to avoid building unwanted heat in the trans. If you do plan to lower the EX and run a smaller tire then I'd wait until that's done to see how it tows your loads then before deciding if deeper gears are warranted.
Good looking wagon by the way, congrats!

My boat isn't overly large or heavy. Its a 16ft closed-bow runabout with a 100hp outboard. Just big enough to go wakeboarding and tubing behind in the summer and fishing in the fall. At only 1400 lbs loaded, I shouldn't even know its behind the Excursion, but I do. The lift kit makes the tongue too tall and shifts the weight rearward, wagging the tail down the highway. Climbing the pass to get to the lake and its downshifting to 2nd to maintain 55mph.

I'm leaving soon for a 10day family reunion camping trip in the mountains. My toy hauler tent trailer doesn't weigh all that much either, only about 2300 lbs empty. With all our gear and my ATV loaded, we'll have a combined weight of about 3500-ish. We'll see how it does pulling the extra weight up into the mountains. I won't have time to remove the lift before we go at the end of the month. I know I'll need new springs and possibly shorter shocks. Got to looking underneath the "Bus" and it looks like there's an aftermarket drop bracket for the panhard bar. Will likely have to take that off and order the original mount if its not still there. Also, it has a double shock hoop on front that isn't stock. Can likely keep it and just install a regular set of shocks. I'm going to have to pay a shop to do this because my jack and stands aren't tall enough to reach the frame.

You have nothing to worry about regarding the 190* trans temp. The trans can run at 220* all day long without a problem.

So, got the estimate for some repair work that needs to be done. Needs new rotors and complete front brake job. Also needs upper/lower ball joints on both sides. Big surprise. I don't have the time for it and I'm about to leave on vacation. Gonna have to pony up the $1100 quoted to me.

Also heard back on the lift removal. Without them seeing it and knowing exactly what is needing to be purchased/replaced, they ballparked it at $15-1700 to get it back to stock. That doesn't include new tires, either. I'm going to ask them about the possibility of leaving some of the lift there. Seems that if the spring packs were split and some leaves removed, with a smaller block, I could easily drop it 4+ inches. I would be happy with that. This is a dedicated off-road shop, not Mom & Pop's garage or the stealership. We'll see what they have to say about that.

The last issue to address is a weird sound upon deceleration. More noticeable at higher speeds, but there is something vibrating or grinding when you let off the throttle. Happens in gear and in neutral. Mechanic didn't think it was a wheel bearing, but possibly something in the driveline. I climbed underneath and noticed the front slip yoke was mighty loose compared to the rear. Looks like the PO kept the original front shaft with the lift because the rubber cover over the yoke is pretty stretched compared to the rear yoke/shaft. I'm guessing that is my source of the odd noise. Question here......am I going to damage anything if I test drive it without the front shaft installed? I don't feel I would but thought I'd ask here first. I welcome your comments
