p1451 driving me crazy

hello everybody,

i have been been a member on here for awhile but for some reason I could not retrieve my password.

I am am having a problem with the p1451 Evap solenoid code.

I have tried two different evap solenoids. I have verified 12volts on the red wire. I checked the resistance of the solenoid and it falls within range.
Also I have removed the canister filter and opened it up and cleaned the filter pads in it. The only thing I have not done is replace the rubber hose that goes from the canister to the fuel tank. It is very rotted looking. My other question is what should I check with the other wire on the solenoid? The red one is 12volts but I take it the other side is the return back to the PCM? I have not bought a replacement canister filter yet because of its expense.

Any help and info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Uh, which "evap solenoid" are you messing with as there are two of them?

I am checking the one on the evap canister filter in the back by the spare tire. I also checked the one in the front on the fire wall. I have been reading a lot of the threads for this issue and everything is saying that it is a circuit fault. So I am going to test the wire again. I am thinking of connecting a 12 volt test light and see if it is getting the signal from the pcm when it initiates a purge. Does that sound right?

Thank you

That would be the "vent" solenoid. The "purge" solenoid is the one on the firewall. Your problem is with the circuit for the vent solenoid only.

The PCM applies a ground to the "low" side of the solenoid's coil to energize it.

Verify the power feed to the coil's "high" side is good, then verify the circuit integrity of the "low" side signal path back to the PCM's output (continuity check, power removed). You can also measure the resistance of the coil to verify that it is in spec.

Most of these faults are due to corroded wires near the solenoid, based on past experiences. Doesn't mean yours is or isn't but be on the lookout anyway.

Ok I will check the wiring over again this weekend. And by "power removed" are saying with battery disconnected?

Thank you

Ok update time.

For about 2 weeks the problem was gone. Then it came back today. So I went ahead and traced out the wires for the connector going from the back to the front. Well underneath the air filter box is were the went into another connection and sure enough tone of the wires had been rubbing on the metal bracket and had exposed the wire. What I think cleared it for the two weeks was I had changed the air filter so I may have moved those wires just enough so they did not ground out but after driving around eventually touched again.

Good Job!

And thanks for taking the time to report back with the solution!

I see the spare tire, but what exactly to look for as far as a connection with the code?
