I'm currently chasing down some idle problems on my 86 5.0,does anyone have a detailed under hood diagram pointing out all the components/switches,etc?
But, you can ultimately figure it out via the EVTM: 1986 EVTM - ???Gary's Garagemahal. You'll have to go to the section on whatever system you are working on and look through the pages. Most of the sections include a listing of the components, connectors, etc for that system, and in that listing it usually gives a page and illustration number which shows the location of it.
I always start with the main EVTM page, the one in the link above. From there I drill down into the section on the system I'm working on. Then, when looking at the list of component locations I frequently find that one of them is on a page not included in that section, so I go back to the main page, look at the range of pages for each section, and go to the one I need.
I've given it a try before in a couple of different ways but never got a complete accurate reading including counting the flashes but none of the codes checked out
I tried for about an hour one day with the Test light method-and the chart you suggested, between counting the pulses counting the pauses trying to find the right chart for them I never came up with any numbers that checked out, I even looked on YouTube at a guy who had the exact same truck year and engine that I had hooked it up just like he did (and the chart you sent) but all the numbers I came up with there were no codes for them so I guess I'm just going to feel my way through it- I do believe it's the IAC valve from all I'm hearing. From from the looks of it I believe it's the original one that came on the truck so it's probably time to change it anyway it wouldn't hurt.

Why don't you get someone to help you with the code counting? Someone else may "get it" right away and be able to help you figure it out.

I have a neighbor with 10 fingers he can use for counting,I bet he "gets it". Together with the link you supplied we will be successful!

sorry about the delay it has died a couple of times when I stop with it in gear but mostly it when I'm sitting with it in neutral that the idle goes up and down rapidly and even when the AC is turned off

Yeah, the Air Controller you said you're going to replace would be suspect, so, good plan. Sometimes you can remove, clean and re-install with new gasket.
Also, check you EGR Valve, to be sure it is not allowing Exhaust to leak into your Intake @ Idle.
This could also be a TPS issue, but you can take some measurements off the TPS.
Keep working for those codes, if I can do it, anyone can......
