oil question

I have used mobile 1 in performance cars that I have owned in the past including a Turbo RX-7 ..... worked fine as long as you made sure to idle the car for at least 2 or 3 minutes before shutting down to prevent coking in the bearings.

But for turbos, the best oil I have used so far has been Red Line.

It has a much higher heat tolerance than conventional dino oils due to it's polyester base stock (pure synthetic).

Both Castrol Syntec & Mobil 1 are made from modified petroleum base stocks so they tolerate heat only slightly better than non synthetics.

For turbos ... synthetics are the only way to go to provide a longer life for your bearings.

I agree that Castrol Syntec uses group III 'hydrocracked' base-stock, but Mobil 1 is a group IV 'PAO' synthetic. (as is Amsoil) What info are you basing your 'both' are made from petroleum stocks?

oil question

I had a chance to read results of a Ford long term durability test of syn oils that indicated Mobil 1 as the top of the heap. Since then, I would expect the competition to continue to improve, particularly Castol, Exxon, etc.
At the time of the study, it also showed that syn oil was efficient enough that the filters were no longer really filtering. The oil kept the bad stuff in a fine suspension and prohibited any build up in the filter, let alone any corners of the engine.
I know several Ford engineers that now use Mob 1 in their lawn mowers and anything else that burns gas. I also know some that see it as advantageous only in high heat situations. Certainly this is more common in newer engines as compared to older high cube blocks and/or reduced engine controls.
My biggest complaint about Mobil is their failure to put a performance guarantee behind it.
Just once have I sent in a sample, it had about 25,000 miles on it. Test showed the oil still performing well. I do not usually run quite that long.
Having said this, I have stuck with Mobil 1 in my vehicles, and do change oil and filter regularly, but at extended intervals. Interval vary with season and use of any particular truck or car. Knock on wood, my family has gone thru a bunch of Fords putting well over 100k miles on each of them, with virtually no engine problems.
