Unhappy R-12 charge cost

Have a question for you A/C guys, I have a '91 fullsize bronco that has all but lost it's cooling capability. It's a factory installed R-12 system and it has worked fine since I bought the truck 3 years ago up until this summer. Now it can barely cool down to say 80 degrees. I think it's leaking at the connection in the line from the accumulator/dryer that dissapears into the black box mounted on the firewall. Oil is leaking at the connection and running down the line. So I am thinking bad o-ring right? What do you think it would cost to take it to an a/c repair center have them recover the remaining R-12, fix the leak, and recharge the system with R-12? Can they put back in the R-12 that they recover? Also, if I take them the R-12 will they put it in for me? Any other suggestions?

R-12 charge cost

Cost is hard to figure, some shops are reasonable, some are ripping folks off. If you can do most of the work yourself, you can save a bunch. It's not hard to do. Some shops will install your R-12, you'll have to ask.

You should have the R-12 recovered. Flush the system using accepted flushing proceedures. Replace all o-rings. If one is leaking now, the rest may follow soon, as they are probably all the same age. Flush the compressor using correct oil, not flushing compound.

Replace oil in compressor and the rest of the system with correct amount. Install a new drier/accumulator. Pull a 29" vacuum and hold it to check for leaks. If no leaks, have R-12 installed.

R-12 charge cost

About your question, Can they replace the Freon they recover? Yes they can. I had an experience a few years a go where they did just that. Only thing is they charged me to recover it and then charged me for replacing it at the same price as new. I asked him why he didn't just put back in my freon he pumped out. He said he did, but that once he removes it and filters it, it becomes his and he can charge what he wants to replace it. So you might want to have an understanding with your mechanic before he starts the process.

R-12 charge cost

Thanks guys, That's kind of what I was thinking. Will look for someone who won't charge me to put back my own R-12 as it was new. I have never worked on an a/c system before but it doesn't look too complicated. On the line from my accumulator that goes into the black box (? on firewall) there is a quick coupling type connection, that takes a special tool to disconnect. On mine there is a metal ring that has come loose from the connection, like a crimp ring or something. Is this something I can replace when I install the new o-rings? Do you think this is what caused my leak in the first place? If I fix the leak at that connection and it holds vaccume overnight should I still repalce all the other o-rings? Seem's to me that would be asking for trouble, I have always taken the "if it aint broke don't mess with it" approach. Or do all the o-rings usually start going about the same age?

Thanks again.
