Hey All, I'm considering a '17 6.2 SD and was wondering what your experiences with them have been so far. What's been your average MPG for a 6.2 4x4 (any rear axle ratio). And any major problems with the 6.2?
I was initially considering a F150, which would be PLENTY of truck for what I use it for, however, I was playing with Ford's build and price tool and found that a similarly equipped SD is only about $3500 more than a F150 (Both XL, SC/SB 4x4). I test drove both of them and actually enjoyed driving the SD more. The one I test drove had the #5600 front suspension and I thought it rode pretty good.
So I wanted to see your experiences with the 6.2 SD. If they don't have any major, recurring problems, and don't suck gas I am strongly considering going with it. Note, I don't expect *amazing* MPG out of this thing. I am thinking that they do 13/16ish assuming flat midwestern ground and 3.73 rear axle. Please let me know what you have thought of yours so far. Also.... please don't try to talk me into a Diesel, don't want to spend the extra 10K, own something more complex than the USS Nimitz, etc.
12mpg total so far for me. Got 15 mpg highway the other day. They have quite a bit of power. I'm coming from an ML320 and a CRV so this thing is a beast. I put a cap on and bedrug. We'll be camping in the truck at some point. I don't tow or carry any cargo.... I just like the truck.
cool, that's not bad at all considering these weigh ~6300 empty. From your signature, your truck is the same configuration I am considering. Has yours had any issues in the time you've owned it so far?

6300?? Granted mine has the diesel, but it weighs 8600 with no occupants and 150 pounds of tonneau cover and junk. I didn't realize the diesel added over 2000 pounds.

Ford claims ~6300 for supercab short bed 4x4 6.2 in their fleet guide. It sounds like this is the base curb weight, so options such as skid plates, etc. will add to that. I have attached a screen shot of the Ford Fleet Guide. This page is 2017 f250 SD. Just curious, what trim level is your 8500 lb truck?

Well, I've got 250 miles on it so no issues yet lol. I put bigger tires on cause the continentals were very small. Did a bunch of other stuff to make the truck more comfortable for me but no problems yet. I'm very happy so far

Mine is a long bed lariat F350 4x4 with quite a few options. Base weight listed on mine is 7700 pounds, so the options and engine must add 800 pounds. My '05 F150 short bed supercab weighs 5700. I can't imagine a Super Duty at 6300.
If you don't need a SD, why get it? Worse handling, ride, fuel mileage, maneuverability. And don't be fooled by the sticker price. There is much heavier discounting of sticker on the 150's.
If you look around, there is a ton of 6.2L info on this site. There is even a separate 6.2L forum here on FTE as well a lot of info all over the web. Google/Bing/yahoo/your search engine of choice is your friend.
In my research is was a bit surprised at how many were going back to a gasser. I was even more surprised to see how many farmers and farm "fleets" were doing mostly gas when replacing field rigs. I'm going back to gas as well for reliability and less maintenance since I plan on keeping the new truck for at least 15 years....maybe more.
I didn't find even $3,500 difference between a Lariat F150 or F250, in real world pricing. Maybe save a couple grand going with the 2.7 EB in the F150, and from what I read, it is a fine motor, just not for me. However, actual dealer pricing for a 3.5 EB or 5.0 Lariat F150 was about the same, or in some cases more, than a 6.2 F250 Lariat. The #1 reason I went with a F250 was that is was basically the same price and you get so much more truck capability for the money.

But a F150 Lariat MSRP is generally higher to begin with. In my area, even with discounts, it was tough to find a F150, CC FX4 Lariat under $50K (selling price, not MSRP) with either the 3.5 EB or 5.0 V8. I didn't "need" a F250 but I went through the numbers with the dealer and he agreed that he could not sell me a similarly equipped F150 for anything less than a few hundred dollars. My dealer is a 1 price shop (invoice - rebates).
Sure, anyone can find a "deal" from time to time, but I looked around for several months before pulling the trigger.
I've got just over 3,000 miles on mine and no initial problems. I traded in a 2015 F150 and to compare, I'm getting 13-15 MPG unloaded and 6-8 pulling a 9,800 lb camper. On the F150 I got 19 mpg unloaded and got 8 mpg towing but never felt comfortable driving faster that 62 mph. The 3.5 EB in the F150 had better power from a start while towing, the F350 feels sluggish starting off comparatively but is very stable pulling the same camper at 70-75 mph.
Just looked again at the website for the largest Ford Dealer in my area. The have 3 F250 Lariat, 6.2 FX4 trucks in stock. MSRP's in the $55K range, advertised price for all 3 is right at $48K.
He has many, many F150 Lariat FX4 trucks and the MSRP range is greater simply because you have more options available with F150. The lowest priced 150, with similar equipment was advertised at $46,7XX for a 5.0 V8. All 3.5 EB Lariats at $48K or higher. Again the 2.7 EB is where the real difference is. They have some advertised as low as $42K for a Lariat FX4.
CRSFX4- yup that's what I am seeing as well after talking with a couple dealers. The F250s (xl/xlt) with 6.2 are basically the same price as a F150. Whether I compare sticker to sticker or discount to discount. F150 may be a bit cheaper but not too much.
Thanks to all who commented on your experience with the 6.2 SD, the mpg seems reasonable (15-16ish hwy) for the amount of truck you get. I did some more browsing on here and didn't see any major, recurring issues with the 6.2's. It seems that Ford learned their lessons after the spark plugs blow out issue with the first gen 5.4/6.8 Tritons.
