im having some more trouble with my truck. it recently had to have a double head gasket job, i rebuilt the rocker arms, replaced the push rods, new radiator, new spark plugs and all that jazz. after all was said and done i went to drive it and the transmission revs high and shifts hard. i bled the coolant system and idled the truck until it was at running temp, the revs werent as high and the shifting wasnt as hard, but its still bad. the transmission was fine until after i finished the work. the fluid looks ok. any ideas?
I see you like turning your own wrenches, have a 99 Ranger, so it's OBD-2 & that means you can get good trouble shooting clues from the inexpensive ELM scan tool running FORScan, or the like diagnostic software on the viewing device of your choice, as discussed here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html. So, come by one & have it take an in depth look at all of the vehicle computer/controllers for trouble code clues & post up All code Numbers, as they can help focus a trouble shoot.
Let us know what you find.
ive been driving the truck a bit, around my neighborhood, and took it to work the last couple days. my drive to work is 10-15 minutes depending on traffic, as i accelerated out off my dirt road to the main road, my engine hit 3k RPM, didnt shift so i kept steady pressure on the peddle to see what would happen. it hit 4k RPM before i took my foot off. put my foot back on the gas, didnt shift. took my foot off then on again, then finally shifted. it also shifts a bit hard into gear about 75% of the time.
If the OD light is flashing, tranny codes are set, so the ELM scan tool should be able to provide some clues.
Until then, do the basics, like check the tranny fluid level as specified in the Owner Manual & report the fluid condition.
Are you using the specified Mercon V fluid, or one that says in writing that it's licensed to meet Ford Mercon V specs & has it & the tranny filter ever been replaced?
Have you ever added any after market tranny fluid additives?
no OD or engine light are showing or ever shown. ive checked the fluid level, as well as looking for metal and found the fluid was good. i changed the fluid and filter a couple years ago, and used specific mercon v fluid. i plan on changing the filter and fluid depending on the codes i get
Do the CEL & OD lights come on for their self checks at KOEO?
Ok so the tranny fluid looks ok & has at least been partially changed a couple of years ago with the new filter & pan refill. How did the old fluid look?

While waiting on the ELM scan tool, since this problem came about After the engine work, you might try wiping the KAM with a battery B- cable disconnect & performing the cold & warm idle relearn routine here EDIT: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...9&postcount=12 & let us know if any improvements.
I looked and didn't see any of those lights and I noticed now my fan direction is stuck on defrost, last time that happened I pinched a vacuum line, I'm going to tear the upper intake off again and see what I can find
Check the firewall mounted vacuum feed tubing manifold for a loose vacuum line through the firewall to the dash mounted AC control. If the system looses vacuum, it'll default to the Defrost position.
If the dash warning lamps don't light up at KOEO for their self check, they're likely burned out, or have been removed.

Ill check the vacuum lines again, and when I was doing the heads, I disconnected a harness at the back maybe that came loose
Review post 9, I have corrected the link for the cold & warm idle relearn routine.
thanks, so over the weekend i repaired two sections of vacuum line, replaced a fuse, and ran diagnostics. i have a throttle position code, and a couple others ill post later. so some symptoms i have is no diagnostic lights for pre-start up. putting the peddle to the floor, there is no forced down shift. also high RPMs before shifting. so i think a connection isnt connected or something.
