So not sure if its me but it seems like my ccv is producing more than normal amounts of smoke.
I have the CCV Mod done and it just seems the amount of smoke coming out of the tube is more than what it has been. It has always smoked but just seems to be a higher amount.
I did the blow by test with the oil cap flipped over, it was puffing pretty good out of the fill tube when i removed the cap also. I flipped the cap over and it just vibrated off. No sign of the cap being puffed off or blown off.
Truck has 295,000 miles, orignal sticks, reman hpop back in 2008 @ 120kmi. Other than that the mods in my signature and common wear items have been replaced.
I have a company vehicle as of the first of this year so its not my DD anymore, but still use it on the weekends for pulling the boat, tractor, home depot trips and things like that. Just want to make sure she's good. Thanks
Forgot to mention oil cooler orings were done 2 years ago. Have noticed my fuel filters are getting darker and darker when they get changed. I know or can imagine the injector orings are probably on borrowed time but I'm waiting till i get the funds together to install new ones instead of just the orings. 160/0 with t-500 should be a nice fix lol.
The amount of smoke from the CCV will vary based on outside temp and humidity, oil type, miles on oil, etc. The odor also changes. I tested with several different name brand oils and some smoked more than others. Some a lot more. Some stunk a whole lot more than others too.
Ignore the amount of smoke and focus on the blowby test. It sounds like you're fine. (I got rid of the CCV mod because I got tired of the smoke)
My concern about the CCV was putting oil in the turbo, and getting the little puddles throughout the CAC system. I once blew the boot off the intercooler inlet boot, and I couldn't get it to stay back on cause there was so much oil in the tube.
I made a 22 gauge steel box, 6"x6"x12" long and located under the cab, running the doghouse line to that and then back up into the turbo inlet. Where the inlet line goes in I stuffed the area with SS mesh to help separate/condense the oil. I also put a clear tube on the back so I can tell when it gets filled and also drain it - I figure it can hold about 1.5 gals of oil before it covers the lines. I guess it's been about three years now and the oil's almost two inches deep. Here it is sitting on my bench, no pictures if it under the truck. Didn't have any spray paint, but plenty of chip brushes and an old can of white Rustoleum.
Mostly I did this 'cause I got a new MIG welder and wanted to see how hard it would be to weld the thin stuff!

WOW hey brother Chris !!!! Man its been a long time since hearing from you. I remember when i first signed upon fte 9 years ago you were the first to post on a few of my threads. Since I've been hooked and have learned a great deal from you and the others on here.
As for the smoke….. yes its been pretty humid here lately good point !
Yes i have always noticed the change in smell from fresh to old oil in the motor.
As i said i don't drive it but on the weekends now. So noticing normal things i get paranoid thinking something may be wrong. Its getting up there in age and mileage and i guess I'm waiting for things to go wrong.
I just want it to always be on its A game !

SaintITC, your oil trap is brilliant. In reality, almost all of that oil would be in the CAC hanging out in the bottom and reducing over time the amount of air flow. Unlike your trap, the CAC cannot be drained (who knows why?). Way to go!

Larry, I don't know how much would actually accumulate there though. I didn't pull my cooler, but at the time I used a long wire gallery brush (like you would use to clean out the oil galleries in your block/heads) wrapped with knit cloths, and stuffed it in through the cooler openings toward what felt like was the bottom, and although they came up dirty, there clearly wasn't a pool of oil down there. And I'm certain that would have been acting like an "oil trap" for the 15 years prior.
Unless I'm getting more blow by since the CAC boot popped off. I haven't pulled anything apart since I did this, but I'm about to as I've been collecting 99.5+ parts recently.
SaintITC I actually built a trap for mine when i originally did the ccv mod. There was a write up on it somewhere on here. I never hooked it up though lol. I will tell you tho CAT heavy equipment has a sweet setup for this.
