Can't Decide

I can't decide. I got a new 2016 F350 and I can't decide on a Drop in bedliner or a rubber bed mat. I don't want a spray in I've had them and not a fan. The bedrug is nice if you don't put stuff in bed. Friend has one and if he puts anything in it cardboard goes down to protect rug... I use my truck for fishing, camping and hunting so I need something that can handle abuse.

Rubber mat hands down. It can take more abuse than a plastic bed liner ever could and whatever you put in the bed won't slide around.

I don't haul rock or dirt, so the bedrug works great for me and has held up well for last 4 years. If I did need to load something dirty, I would probably just use a tarp over the bedrug.

While the drop in liners can last quite a while the biggest issue with them is the water and moisture that collects underneath. After a while of that moisture under the liner you start to get rust.

I have seen some instances where the rust after a while started to rust thru the bed in spot ( I gather from the water pooling in certain areas I would guess )

My vote would either be for a rug or go and get a sprayed in bed liner. Sprayed in liner isnt cheap but if it is done by folks who know what they are doing it will last a long while. but a bed rug or good rubber mat from a place like tractor supply or something will work as well.

Bed mat. Those spray in liners fade over time, then they look like crap.

I don't really understand that statement. Had a BedRug in my 2014. Moved it into my 2016. I own a seamless gutter business and my BedRug has ladders & materials in it every day. Along with all of my other non business uses for camping and hauling anything else that I've ever had to haul in a pickup.
It's pretty tough stuff. I don't see why your friend puts down cardboard to protect it. To me, cardboard would be a little slick in most cases.
But hey, if your buddy says they're no good ............
As far as spray in, I bought a Raptor kit from ebay and did one myself several years ago. I only had that truck a couple of years but it lasted pretty good and the price was certainly right. I'd never done one before, but it looked like I'd sent the truck out and had it done by a shop.

rubber mat so you can pull it out and clean underneath. I bought a truck once that had a plastic bedliner and when I pulled the liner up to look underneath the paint was already scuffed up pretty good(truck only had 23k on it). I pulled the plastic liner out and threw it away and ran a rubber mat until I got it sprayed.

Fishing, camping and hunting isn't abuse. Blood literally washes right out. If it's dried on, I'll hit it with a water hose and deck brush. If I need to slide in pallets, I'll drop down 2 2x4s and slide on those instead of the bedrug. Occasionally I'll carry 2 full pallets of Quikrete which comes out to almost 6900 lbs. The bedrug can take it.

It's weird how one person has good luck with a product and another doesn't. But it happens every day. My fit & finish has been satisfactory using the same rug in both trucks.
My complaint is the cost of a replacement install kit. $40+ on Amazon for what is basically double sided tape and velcro.
RV dealer had to cut out a couple spots when they installed a 5th wheel hitch. But next time around I might just let it go with the truck and stick the cutout portions back in place.
The rug has worked out for me, but I was happy with the Raptor self spray in liner and might go back to that on the next truck. Like fordman says, I've removed plastic liners in the past and the scuffing was pretty bad, just about all the way through the paint. And this was on trucks that had dealer installed plastic when the truck was new on the lot.
