Wife is insisting on rear entertainment for the little monkeys in the back seat. Probably not a bad idea since we have a 12-14hr drive coming up.
Truck is soon to be delivered so I'm looking for good ideas that don't involve players sliding around on the console and no place for me to rest my right elbow. Been there.
Looking for info and opinions on the in headrest screens/players vs. the ones that hang off of the headrest posts.
I bought a pair of DVD players for the truck but I only needed one since I only have one child needing it. It has a 12 volt plug with a split to power both units. Clipped around the bottom of the head rest. Easy to use disc player. 3.5 MM Headphone jack. No problem. However, i noticed in my last long trip, my child was more interested in playing with the table than the DVD player. In this day in age, you can pretty much transfer media on to a fairly inexpensive device and have enough to cover several hours of traveling. My wife and I purchased a hot spot for any vehicle which gave everyone access to the web while on the road. It worked great on the last road trip. If you have a Kindle and Amazon Prime, you are so set. We put probably 20 gigs worth of shows, movies, and games on the Kindle.
Ford has both dvd system and headrest mounted Ipad holders. These are both designed with safety in mind to not create projectiles in the event of an accident.
My kids download a couple of movies to their ipads before we leave and they are good to go. I always said i would not stick my kids nose in a sceeen to keep them quiet. Then i had kids.......
It's a device you put a thumbdrive with movies on into. They you can stream the movies from the device to an iPad/tablet/phone/etc. I've got 50+ movies on a 128GB thumb drive and it keeps the kids from arguing with each other. Works great, and you can take it to the RV/hotel/wherever with you if necessary. We usually limit for trips to ensure the kids are seeing parts of the countryside they haven't seen before.
I have 3 kids and often travel with all three. I bought 3 iPad Minis for them (buy the oldest model you can find with the greatest amount of storage, wifi only) all they do is play games and watch movies while on the plane or in the car. On occasion they ask for food or a bathroom break but never do they scream, fight or otherwise bother me. If you buy an older model on eBay, you will save money, not ruin the interior of your truck and have portable entertainment should you bring the kids on an airplane. If you end up getting iPads, get the Iguy foam case, looks silly but is ideal for when the kids inevitably whip the iPad after losing a game.
I agree with others re: the tablets and mounts. I've had the DVD systems and they're more trouble than they are worth. The DVDs get scratched and dirty on long road trips or just get lost. I bought my kids tablets, downloaded their favorite movies/games onto them and just made sure they had the chargers plugged in. Good to go. We don't even buy DVDs anymore, we purchase through the Android Play Store.
300.00 per Setup = Plenty of Quiet time on a long trip!
As far as movies, I have 45 GB of her DVD's I have ripped using DVD9Fab for about 45.00 and it works great, and has a great picture for Tablets. Sometimes the BlueTooth headphones act crazy, but turn them off and back on and they are fine. I think it is because I got the cheap ones or maybe the joysticks are interfering with them.
I rip all of the DVD's for my daughter to a 64 GB chip, setup the File-Hub for streaming and she can just pick a movie, after that she can choose a game and use the BT joy stick for playing. Then if you stop at a hotel you plug it into the wired connecting and don't have to change any settings for them to surf. I love it and all together still 1K cheaper then the Ford DVD Player in the headrest and it goes where they go!
Thanks for all the feedback. I agree with the arguments for the tablet solution. Unfortunately...
We took delivery of the truck on July 2nd and I just got around to installing the two screens/DVD players. Fishing the cables through the seat backs was the challenging part. Also believe the hype about the pass through wires being a PITA.
I wired it to the #1 upfitter switch so that Mom can kill the fun if they aren't listening/obeying. Used the technique of running the power cable through the hood seal.
Thanks again for the info and feedback. We will join the 21st century at a later date... lol!

I bought the same DVD players. Very good quality and very happy. Used them in the other car so far but I'm so happy I may purchase them for the super duty
