I posted this in transmissions section, but no answers after a few days. I have a Factory tech valve body for my 4r100 that I never put in. I was so long ago, that it is a signed unit with Greggs initials in sharpie on the side. He made it just for my Ex after I told him I wanted it for towing.
the trans is in good shape at 97k miles, but the front seal is going and dripping oil when hot and towing. Trans oil changed every 20k miles or so. So I have to drop the trans to change the seal, so I might as well install this thing. The Ex is primarily a tow vehicle, with only 10 - 15% or so for other running.
The question is whether the Factory tech body is as good as the new shift kits they have nowadays.. You think I should go ahead and install it or get a newer kit to update it with?
Gregg was a big presence on the L forums back in the day and his FTVB's were the shiz for the gas 4R100's. You can see in my sig what trans is in my L.

I haven't posted much for the past year, but I have been reading. June of last year, I shattered the top of my right humerus (the head and ball part of the upper arm bone) and it did a hell of a lot of soft tissue damage, too. They managed to put it back together after 6 hours of surgery, but it took 9 months of therapy to get the use of my arm back. I only started getting decent strength in the last three months since then. On top of that, I broke the elbow joint on the OTHER arm 6 weeks ago! (Not too bad, 10 weeks to heal total) It is healing, but I can now work with my dominant right arm and finally get stuff done. (carefully)
So expect to see me posting more.

Stewart- I wish it had been something glamorous like a Rodeo clown or even a skydiving accident. Alas, they were as mundane as it comes. The shoulder shattering was by falling off a 2 step stool while painting the ceiling of my Family Room. Landed on my elbow, and the shock went up the bone and crushed the top into the shoulder bones. A real mess inside. To add insult to injury, 2 months after surgery, I got shingles in my left shoulder front and back. Lots of nerve damage and pain that won't go away.
6 weeks ago, another stupid. I was putting yard tools away in the garage, turned around and started to go get more stuff to put away, and tripped over the hose of my backpack blower. Landed on my left hand and did two wonderful fractures of the end of the arm bones at the elbow.
Maybe God is trying to tell me to take it easy, but there are too many dang things I want to get done before he takes me!
Just be careful, folks, It doesn't take much to ruin your year.

Is the VB swap as straight forward as unbolting the old and bolting up the new? Maybe dealing with a spring or 2 here and there, but pretty straight forward?
Very straightforward. Only a straight swap. Just make damn sure you use a inch/lb torque wrench on the bolts when you put the new one in and get the torque right. Too much or too little torque can warp the valve body enough to cause a sticky valve and then it causes major shift problems.
Back in the mid-2000's, Gregg sold the Monster Box transmission name and build specs to Jasper. I wonder when Diesel Site started selling the valve body.

Yes, just make sure you unbolt and remove the correct valve body or you'll be chasing little plastic ***** after they slip out from the worm trails in the valve body.
The one you want to change doesn't have any plastic check ***** to worry about.
I licensed my Monster Box design to Jasper in 2004, a contract that expired in 2012. I later sold all of Factory Tech to Bob at Dieselsite.com and I worked with Bob for several years, watching him spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to perfect the manufacture of the best aftermarket transmission on the market, the Legendary Transmission. And I don't get paid to say that, while I still do some occasional consulting for Deiselsite, I'm not on the regular payroll. I'm so glad that when I gave up Factory Tech it was taken over by someone who had the passion to do it right. I encourage you to go to their website and look at the pictures and I think even a video of the Legendary Transmission. And honestly, I've been in this business for 30 odd years now, and outside of the day job where we spend millions of dollars on stuff, I haven't seen anyone who takes such care to build a transmission.
As for the "other, newer" shift kits, I just have to say, my own honest opinion of every one I've ever seen is someone trying to copy what I did in the 1990's. Most of them don't even get it right. But that's me.

I haven't been active on the L boards in almost 10 years, so I have no clue what the "favorite" trans for that crowd is now, but your trans has survived 4 different engines in my L.

Glad to hear it. I'm pretty out of the loop nowadays, I am driving a C-Max Hybrid and I'm working on the 10 speed launch. This is gonna be my last transmission and I'm kind of afraid it might be Ford's last one, too.
