I recenly bought a 2000 Explorer XLT,but I only have one Key
the dealership near me has the chip keys, but wants $30.00 for the key and $30.00 to program it The owner's manuel has the sequence to program the key,but it reads that you need both the original keys My question is can I program a new key with one original key?
I don't think so. Some people have been able to do this on older models, but I don't think you can on a 2000. I was in the same spot when I bought mine, and the local dealer charged me $55 for a second key and programming. After getting the second key, I bought a third off Ebay and programmed it myself.
Bpatterson, it's a "Strattec" brand key. IIRC, I paid about $12 plus maybe $2 shipping. There's no model number or any other identifiers on any of the keys.
The dealer also sold me a Strattec brand key. My original has "Ford" printed on it. All three keys look identical except for the Ford script on the original. Apparently Strattec supplies the keys to Ford.
