The last thing I posted was when my 99 expy 5.4 started sounding like the wheel of fortune. I started having a little sputter issue on low end power, light on the pedal. I had a spare engine in the garage so I yanked the old one. I found the wheel of fortune was coming from a really badly cracked flex plate. I replaced it, got everything back together started it up and damn it sound worse. There is some kind of loud like clunk/banging going on. Also the starter whines and kinda grinds a bit when it engages. I was wondering if it was fully disengaging could that be the problem? The only other thing I can think of is the torque converter and I really hope its not cause I can't afford the $250 for a new one. It also starts to stall out here and there sitting in the driveway. And it doesn't matter what gear the sound never changes.
Noise on engagement is not good either, so it could be out of alignment with the new flex plate.
Did you make sure the new flex plate was the same as the old?
Did you make sure that the torque converter was 100% seated when you reinstalled The engine? You should have to pull it forward a bit to get the nuts on the studs.
A torque converter that isn't fully seated is a really bad thing and makes a terrible whine as the pump quickly welds itself together.
