Regeneration parameters

I have a 2017 f350 CC short bed 6.7 4 x 4 that will utilized as a work truck in the mountains of Western NC; most of the driving is on mountain roads with some pullling of equipment.

I am using Forescan to monitor some different parameters including EGT's, Boost and regeneration just to keep an eye on things. At this juncture, I have 640 miles on the truck with probably 200 highway miles and I have not seen any regeneration messages.

Forescan is giving me the following info:

DPF soot INF =. 5.09
DPF Regen = 3.92. I am assuming this is the soot trigger point for regen?
DPF Soot = 60%
DPF Soot OL = 7
DPF Fail NUM = 0

I have seen in a number of posts where motors are go into regen every few hundred miles or I think I am hearing at 3.92 soot level?

Am I needlessly concerned or do I need to consider checking in with the dealer? I have Blue Driver and have checked for codes with that app and everything is clear so it appears that no attempts have been made to regenerate.

Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated as my wife would like to see me stop worrying.

Thanks for any wisdom.

Folklore at least has it that it will regen every 500 miles regardless of load. I tend to believe that since mine regened the first time at exactly 500.1 miles.

There does not seem to be a single number from Forescan, valid every time, or for every truck, that triggers a regen. Mine will show maybe 3.6 g/l, and 120% load on Forescan when it begins regen, but this varies quite a bit from one to the next. The only thing that happens for sure, is when the dash gage says 100% it will begin within a minute. The dash gage does not correlate perfectly with any number from Forescan.

You have probably had a regen, the message only lasts a couple of seconds and is very easy to miss. If you see your fuel mileage drop by about 30% for 20 miles, its happening.

Get back into Forescan and put up two other PIDs: one is miles since last regen and one is average miles/regen. Forget exactly what they are called but something like that. The miles since last regen only gets updated on a key cycle, not while you are driving. There is another one, regen status, which will go to ACTIVE during a regen.

That's all on a 2015, don't know how different a 2017 is but my guess is not much.

I have the PID for miles since last regen on my Forscan and it showed 4.6 since last regen and has never updated. It always says 4.6. I figured that function didn't work. Anyone know what I need to do to fix it?

You can use Forscan to turn on Force Regen and that will add the %DPF Full to your dash under Truck something (top item on your menu screen.) Regens always occur at DPF Full. Almost everything else varies. I've had regens with Soot GPL anywhere from 1.10 to 3.98. DPF Load is typically at 100% long before I get to DPF Full. When I just do long drives, I got 500 miles between, but a few short drives reduce that a lot.
Look for threads on using FORScan to add %DPF Full.

Mine seems to work and I did nothing special. It only updates on a key cycle, but it updates every key cycle.

The DPF Load as reported by Forescan, yes. It does not track the DPF load reported by the dash gage well. When the dash gage says 100%, it will change to Full and then into regen within a minute or two. On my truck, the DPF load reported by Forescan will usually be at 120% or so.

Thank you for all of the replies.

I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this information, but in speaking to two dealerships service departments, both stated that they did not know of a default mileage for regen in the 2017's. I mentioned that I had heard that the default mileage on 2015's was 500 miles and was this still accurate or had that been changed.

Both individuals I spoke with said that that had changed and there was no set mileage for regeneration on the 2107's. This conversation was over the phone; I prefer to be in person to see the body language and have better sense of the person convictions regarding the information being given.

I will keep looking for definitive info on the regen for the 2017's and if I find the holy grail/definitive source, I will report back.

Again, thank you for everyone's time and input.
