Certified Speedometer

Does anyone know it there was a certified Speedo with higher MPH for these trucks? There were plenty on them in law enforcement. Anyone know where one is?

1993 to 1995 Lightnings have a 120 MPH speedometer, but it's not certified like the P71.

120 MPH would do it. I was looking for something that was direct fit into the cluster of the 80-86 models

I am not aware anything exists for that vintage.

I don't believe there was a 120mph one for anything under 93 (so it could technically work in the 92-96 trucks).

On top of that, finding a 93-95 lightning cluster is pretty expensive unfortunately. I'd love to get one to throw in my truck, but the last time I saw a cluster it was about 600 dollars on ebay... I can't use anything else besides the odometer as well since the other stuff has to stay diesel, so I'd be spending 600 dollars for one part. I may eventually do that, but that will have to be a bit later down the road.

Ok I have to ask, what is a certified speedometer in this context? I could get the idea of having a speedometer certified for accuracy, but the speedometer itself is just an indicator that relies on other systems for accuracy.

BTW "these trucks" doesn't give enough info anyway. 91 and older are mechanical speedos and 92-97 are electric. That said I highly doubt there's anything 78-91 that indicates over 85.

Most vehicles use for law enforcement had speedometers that went to higher speeds than the others. It was common got them to go to 140-150 mph. Those were also certified as correct before they left the factory. So looking for a certified speedometer should yield something beyond 85 mph. As for theses vehicles, I apologize--I thought I was in the 1980-86 bullnose forum. All of those F series and Bronco would be interchangeable.

Kinda my bad as well, I missed your second post that said 80-86.

In that case man you're looking for a longer needle in a pile of needles. If I(and I do) want a speedo that indicates over 85 I'd go aftermarket. A lot of aftermarket speedos out there, in particular electric ones that are easier to tune for ratios, tire size, etc. An electronic vehicle speed sensor could be easily added. Hardest part for you would be converting the signal to something accurate. Though I'm sure there's a way/product I haven't looked for a stand alone unit to do it. I'm using a Baumann controller and it has that feature built in. Though if I wanted to look I'd start with an outfit called Dakota Digital, I'll be buying a similar unit from them to convert my Diesel tach signal. Heck Autometer my do it as well, not sure yet.

Here, one of the first two units on this page depending on how you'd prefer to set it up. Speedometer Calibration & Interfaces

I am aware of those. I have added a wheel speed sensor for the MegaSquirt anyway. I try not to be the guy that buys all the doodads but actually engineers fabricates. Anyone (most anyone) can buy and install parts. I have made a new face for the old speedo that goes to 120 mph and re-calibrated it to point there at 2000 rpm. Before I made it I checked to see that it pointed where 60 would be at 1000 rpm in case it is not linear.

A Venezuelan Bronco/F-150 Speedometer 90 and up would go up to 180 KPH (roughly 112.5 MPH) and show mark for both units. Those must be Factory certified too, probably the same with Canadian speedometers.
