Hard Initial starting

Got a 70 F250 with a 360 and 2 barrel. Starts great when warm but the first start almost always requires starting fluid.. then it starts great! Want to get to the bottom of this, thanks for everyone's help ahead of time!

What is your procedure for starting it?

(What do YOU do when you try to start it?)

Sounds like:

1. A choke setting problem.
2. A dry or low fuel level (float issue)

Starting procedure:
I press gas all the way to floor and open up choke all the way (2100 manual choke)

Just replaced fuel pump because it was leaking but this neither helped or hurt the problem. When warm I just bump the key and she starts right up. Maybe float isn't adjusted correctly? Timing?

In warm weather, you shouldn't really need the choke at all. Accelerator pump working correctly?

Have you tried pumping it twice? Possibly even 3 times? Or don't pump it at all? (I never have to pump mine in warm weather.)

Yeah probably wouldn't need pumped in warm weather but probably still need to close the butterfly to start, which will in turn move the accelerator and pump a bit anyway because of the fast idle setting. At any rate, for whatever reason it sounds like there's no gas in the bowl after it's sat all night.

Check the floats for proper setting.

Second and third the notion of a leaky accelerator pump diaphragm.....hence the "no gas in the bowl after its sat all night."

Well, 1st thing is you have to close the choke all the way to start a cold engine. Once it fires then open it up a bit. Also what might be hurting you is if you have a chrome open element air cleaner. This makes it easier for the gas to evaporate out of the carb's fuel bowl. If driven every day this doesn't usually present a problem. Usually when the truck sits in the sun for days in between starts is when it does.
