Bought a fixer upper 2001 v10 and it's definitely not running on all cylinders. Also the check engine light is not on and the PCM is not saying it's on (per my code reader) and it doesn't come on when I turn the key on.
Is it possible the previous owner had a programmer of some sort to disable the CEL? If the bulb were removed my scan tool would still show it on. Trying to get it to tell me which cylinders I am having trouble with.
Bulb was out. Easy enough. Its running bad enough I'm surprised its not on though. Pulled all of the plugs, several were loose causing the boots to degrade and a few boots are rough.
Question though, all of the plugs came out fine, but one came out with what looks like some kind of thread repair. I know these has spark plug issues, it was like a threaded sleeve that the plug screwed into came out with the plug. What kind of repair was this and what do I have to do to re install new plugs?
Does that threaded insert look like a Helicoil? They are the most common thread repair product but are a poor choice for spark plug repairs on these motors. The Timesert thread repair kit is regarded as the best fix for a blown out plug.
No I don't think it's a helicoil. I don't have first hand experience with heli-coils but it would have spaces between the threads and be pretty thin correct? this looks more like a sleeve.... But it came off of the spark plug in 2 pieces. I can see the same thing in one of the other holes but it appears to have stayed in.
Yeah the problem I have after reading so far is know I have at least 1 oversize hole that will need repaired. but I don't know the condition of the rest of the holes. So if they are original I would need the regular kit as well. (ouch) 2 of the spark plug boots had a ton of carbon build up which makes me think there was a questionable repair done. Or could have just been a loose plug? could just pull the heads I guess.
If the job goes as far pulling the heads you may want to explore a set of later heads with the increases spark plug hole threads, those ones almost never experience plug issues.
