{building a '52 F3 using powertrain & wiring from a '95 F150...}
looking at wiring diagrams, i've got a connector in this harness for an ICM. so when i search ignition control module online at parts stores, they all say something to the effect of "with module on distributor" ...
my ALLDATA wiring diagrams show the ICM should live on the inner fender.
so, if my distributor doesn't appear to have anything superfluous, does that mean that not all models used this ICM and maybe i don't have/need it? i've got a connector on the harness for it, but i don't see anything unusual on the distributor.
Your ALLDATA wiring diagrams are correct, the ICM should be on the inner fender and I'm sure you will need one.
What transmission are you using? I only ask to get this information on the table so others can advise you. The knowledgeable guys should help you tomorrow with all the wiring.
What they are describing is whether you have DURASPARK or TFI (module on dist bowl).
Is the donor vehicle still available?
Did it again...
EDIT-
What they are describing is whether you have DURASPARK or TFI (module on dist bowl).
What cataloging is asking is whether the Ignition Control Module (TFI) is on the dist housing or if it is remote mounted. FORD mounted some applications remote due to engine heat or interference.
Remote TFI began in the mid-eigthies as I sill have as assembly from an '85 MERKUR that I was going to use on a DURASPAK II conversion update I never got around to.

What I am trying to get at is the donor vehicle's VIN and Calibration Code still available? When you do drive-train swaps that info will be invaluable later.
In the 2nd picture, you will see a GREY rectangular plug. It's just above the PCM and left of the yellow tape. It has I think 4 or 5 pins. That's the ICM connector.
A '95 F-150 would have a Remote-Mounted BLACK ICM module that was located on the fender well.
Regardless of what many part manuals/sites state you need a remote mount CCD style (Ford/Motorcraft = black) Ignition Control Module.
Latest Part Numbers I have are:
Motorcraft - DY1077 (supercedes DY679, DY667, DY645) Ford - 5U2Z-12A297-D (supercedes F1PZ-12A297-A)

The reference to the distributor mounted ICM is for 1991 and earlier trucks using the EEC-IV computer system. All of these used the distributor mounted Push-Start ignition ICM (Ford/Motorcraft = gray).
Ford moved the ICM from the distributor to a fender mounted heat sink in 1992. 1992 and 1993 trucks used a remote mount Push-Start ignition ICM, also gray.
1994 and later trucks use the black colored CCD style ICM, also remote mount. The confusion comes into play because many part manuals have the Push-Start and CCD style ICM compatibility swapped. We go through this exercise at least once a week.
You have an interesting project, just be sure to use a black colored (assuming Ford/Motorcraft) CCD style Ignition Control Module.

yep, i was able to ID the ICM connector thanks to wiring diagrams... (that's how i knew i was apparently missing something).
guess i'll head to the local pull-n-pay and grab that ICM from the fender. assume 92-96 would work? or i guess it would need to be 5.8 (not 5.0). does it need to be an auto tranny, or does it not matter?
i do have a couple of connectors which i haven't been able to ID yet -- i'll post pix "just in case" somebody recognizes what they go to.
Grab the heatsink from the inner fender and only a BLACK ICM.
All trucks had a BLACK ICM by '95. Unless someone else corrects me. Engine size shouldn't matter...300,302, 351, or 460. They all had them located remotely by that time. '92 and '93 will have the heatsink, but they have a GREY ICM.
The (donor) Vehicle Calibration Code will get you into one specific parts list as to how the engine emission systems were assembled. It will get you all emissions, some fuel specific to the assembly and ignition (which will indicate what TFI Module to use).
my ALLDATA wiring diagrams show the ICM should live on the inner fender.
ALL-DATA schematics do not show component connectors?
