Folks I need assistance. 2005 Case - IH JX 1090U 90 engine hp turbo Tractor. I hate to ask but you guys usually have the answers when I'm at my wit's end, (does not take long to get there).
Tractor has water in fuel. I have ran her low, siphoned it lower, dumped enough Diesel water remover to take care of 300+ gallons of fuel. I have changed fuel filters several times and each time it has the appearance of water in the fuel.
If tractor is used and then sits a few hours to over nite she has to crank a LOT to start. I have sprayed ether around all hoses, inj's, line connections I can get to. There is no change in running sound by ear. I bought the tractor new, it's my wife's and this is the first time this has happened in 12 years.
Tractor sits near house this entire time so I don't think there is sabotage, also, the cap is not that old. Original was lost by help somehow, this is dealer ordered replacement 3 years old. Any suggestions? Any home remedies?

Find the fuel line from the tank, pull it, and use a small lift pump(or gravity feed if you can) to drain it into a clear bucket.
I'd just drain the entire thing and add new diesel.
What you got out(if it's enough to worry about) should sit in a bucket for a while and let the water settle to the bottom. The good diesel can then come off the top.
FWIR, some water removers are actually dispersant's. So the water may not be pooled at the bottom of your tank anymore. You might try adding more water remover.
Also , algae needs water, so you may have a blocked fuel filter soon.
Short of draining all the fuel, the next best quick option is to use an external pump and circulate it through an external filter.
If the engine won't restart after sitting overnight, in our trucks, this is because fuel either leaked out, or returned to the tank when a small leak allowed air to seep in. The air makes it hard to start after sitting overnight.
Look for fuel leaks or old cracked fuel lines or fuel return lines.
Problem has got worse. Now after a hard start and running for a while, after 2 hours down time hard start again. I am talking a long crank, rest, long crank, rest, long crank and maybe start or crank again. Checked water in fuel separator and looked good this time.
Check for wrench tight on all fittings, lines, inj.'s etc. I spray different things on the lines, looked with lights and glasses. NO bubbles. Not sure what to do.
This problem is very recent, but coincided with water in fuel filter issue.
Tractor has 23XX hrs. and never had any parts changed. I wonder, if the lift pump could be bad? Seen this on an older IDI once. Not sure where it is though. I have an owners manual, no service manual. Will look on line. I believe it is the pump with the manual prime handle on it?
I have had a similar problem in the past. Checked everything you just mentioned. Ended up being an injector check valve stuck open.
Tractor ran fine once you got it to start, then would not start without lots of priming, if it sat over a few hours.
I cured it by running a 50/50 mix of ATF with the clean diesel and new filters.
It took several hours of run time to get it cleared up.
I knew the problem was gone when I looked at the filter and it was still full of fuel after sitting all night.
This was a Deutz air cooled with the tank lower than the engine.
Hope this was useful info. Good luck.
Thanks Iowa. This tractor has the tank below the engine too. I will try to mix up a blend and also I was going to check either pressure or vacuum drop on both sides of that pump.
OK, being as how I'm lazy, I went the mix route first. I poured a gallon Dex/Mer trans fluid and a healthy dose of Sta-bil for Diesel's and 2 small bottles of 2 cycle oil bottles and drove out to the country store and shot 10 gal fuel in her. This was on top of a bunch of Diesel Kleen and 911 and CRC.
She is running good and started perfect the last 8 or ten times. I guess something was sticking sure enough. Wish we still Hi-sulfur fuel!!!
