Hello all, i need help figuring out a problem. I have a 95 7.3 powerstroke and I am having an issue that i need fixed asap as this is my work truck and i depend on it greatly. So it usually runs pretty well. 310,000 miles. I have a couple problems with it, the 2nd gear synchronizer seems to be worn as I have to slow WAY down to get it to shift into 2nd without grinding. like...5-10 miles an hour. I also have some sort of problem with my glow plugs, I just plug the block heater in when its cool and its fine. white smoke with cold start up, if i can get it to do it. so Im assuming I need to get under the valve cover and change those out.
But its summer and I had a brief stint with unemployment and I was tryng to wait a few months while I caught up. So it was working fine for me
Last wednesday as I was leaving for work, I backed out of my driveway, shifted to 1st and noticed the truck felt and sounded kinda odd, looked down and check engine light was on and I just immediately put it in reverse and backed it up into my driveway. It seemed like it was starved for fuel and would stall. I was barely able to back it into the driveway. So now heres what happens...
I turn the truck on, it idles *ok* sounds a little rougher than normal but still seems *ok* i can step on the gas with it in neutral or with my foot on the clutch and it revs up...But when I put it in gear it sounds starved for fuel and stalls out. seems to do a little better in reverse than in 1st.... Im not totally sure if thats true or if thats just a coincidence.
The oil was low when I checked it. I did an oil change and changed the fuel filter, and that's all I have done so far. I am new to diesels and this is also my first manual vehicle as well. I am decent at doing work myself but I lack the experience to diagnose. I did some researching around on this forum before I wrote the post, it seems like there is so much information and I couldnt tell what applied to my problem and what didnt. So I apologize if I am repeating an already answered problem and thanks in advance for your help.
It has nothing to do with the transmission or clutch. The load is just making the underlying issue more evident. You'll need to obtain codes if the CE light came on.
i got ya. i cant really get the truck anywhere to get the codes checked. looking around to see if anyone i know has a reader. just thought someone might have some insight... cps???
I cant get the reader to pick up any codes. I have tried a few different apps, it connects to the reader and they all say no trouble codes. The truck is becoming harder and harder to keep on.
"Support iOS (iPhone6 6 plus 5s 5c iPad Air Mini 4) & Android (Samsung S5 S4 Note 3 Note 2. LG 2 Google Nexus) & Windows. Support (free "OBD Car Doctor "APP, the "DashCommand" APP is $9.99) for iOS. Support "Torque Pro "APP for Android device."
I have read that the 95 has both obd1 and obd2 and you wont be able to get codes until you "reflash" it??
I also read that these truck are hard to get a reading from and you need a scanner that specifically reads obs psd? im sorry im asking so many questions. I am new to using a scanner and I am working so much and need to figure out asap, borrowing boyfriends truck, but, cant do that for long.
It's NOT OBD-I, and it's not a "generic" OBD-II. That's why you can't just connect to with with any old thing. Over on the "Nation", there's a loooooong thread about using Torque Pro and CarGauge Pro with an Android device. They need specific PID configuration to talk to our trucks.
My cheapskate preference is a beater Windows laptop, a wired USB ELM327 connector, and the free Forscan app.
